THE FOLLOWING morning, Eden's feet carried her to Ben's front door. Her heart was pounding in her chest, and her mind was racing with endless thoughts of nonsense. She knocked on the door, her hand shaking slightly. When he opened the door, she was met with a warm familiar smile.

"Eden, hey."

Eden smiles, "Hey, can I come in?"

Ben lets her in and takes her to the living room, she can't remember the last time she was here. Or if she had been here at all, but somehow, someway she knew where he lived. As they settled into the cozy living room, a silence fell between them, broken only by the ticking of a nearby clock. Eden couldn't shake the feeling of familiarity, but at the same time, everything felt so new and unfamiliar. It was as if she was in a dream, a dream she had been in before but had forgotten.

She glanced around the room, taking in the warm lighting, the soft furniture, the bookshelves lined with stories of lives lived and experiences gained. She always knew that Ben was a major book nerd, and it seemed as though that hadn't changed since they last saw each other. "So..."

"So..." Ben let out a soft chuckle, breaking the tension with his easy laugh.

"I know this is a bit odd, you showing up like this. But, I'm really glad you did. I always wondered what happened to you." He paused for a moment, his eyes searching her face as if trying to place her in a memory he couldn't quite recall. "It's been what, a few years since we last spoke?"

Eden nods, for some reason she needed the feel of comfort. It almost felt like she was in the twilight zone. Something major had recently happened, but she can't pinpoint what it was. It was eating her on the inside.

"What...what's life like for you now? Are you in school like I am, or working?" Ben asks.

"I'm working. I graduated early and got my degree so I could become a lawyer. I work for Nelson & Murdock in Hell's Kitchen."

"Nelson & Murdock, huh? I've heard of that firm - what was it? The Castle case? They're supposed to be pretty good. It's actually impressive that you graduated early and became a lawyer. I'm sure you're pretty good at it too, considering how driven you've always been," Ben gives her a little smile.

"You probably have the whole courtroom wrapped around your finger." He leans back on the couch, as if trying to look cool and casual, but it's obvious that he's intimidated by her accomplishments.

"So, what's the law like? Is it as exciting as they show on TV?"

Eden laughs and shakes her head. In some ways her job was quite similar to the Law & Order tv shows, but, at the same time it was completely different. "I'm surprised you know about the Castle case. Law doesn't seem like your thing," Eden responds.

Ben shrugs, "Sometimes if it's slow at work I like to catch up on the latest drama."

"I don't blame you. The Castle case was actually my first big case I got to work on with Matt. It was intense..."

Eden furrowed her brows, trying to make sense of the thoughts swirling in her mind. She felt a sense of unease, as though something was missing - something bigger than just the Castle case. It was like a void, a chasm in her memory, leaving her with a sense of disquiet that she couldn't quite shake. She felt as though she had worked on something more significant than the Castle case, but the details were elusive - like a dream that fades upon waking. She knew she needed to figure out what this was, but the answer just seemed out of reach.

Ben's brow was creased with concern as he searched Eden's face for clues. In all the years they'd known each other, he'd never seen her like this - so unsettled, so pensive. He reached out a hand to caress her cheek, his thumb swiping across it.

"Hey...What's going on in that pretty little head of yours?" Ben asked softly.

Eden seemed to awaken from her day dreaming as she felt Ben's gentle touch on her cheek. "It's like...I feel like there's something I'm missing, something important, a person... but I just can't seem to remember what or who it is. It's driving me crazy."

Ben's hand was still cupping her cheek, drawing her closer. Her breath caught in her throat as she met his gaze, his eyes burning with an intensity that made her heart race. In the quiet of the room, the sound of their breathing seemed amplified, filling the space between them. They were so close now, their lips almost touching.
