The next morning, Eden awoke to a throbbing pain in her head, her hand instinctively moving to soothe the ache. As her thoughts began to clear, she recalled saying goodbye to Peter, who had said something about her not being able to remember him. But fragmented memories of a conversation on the rooftop the previous night also surfaced, leaving her confused and disoriented.
Why was she struggling to remember what had happened? Had Peter's words held some deeper meaning? With a sense of unease, Eden tried to piece together the events, hoping to uncover the truth behind her fragmented memories.
Groaning, Eden swung her legs over the edge of the bed and sat up, squinting against the bright sunlight streaming through the window. Her mind felt like it was swimming in a thick fog, making it difficult to piece together the events.
As she sat up and finally got used to the light, she could see a figure in her doorway, which she could easily guess was Matt.
"Matt?"
"Hey, how are you feeling?"
"Ive been better," Eden admitted, offering her a weak smile as he joined her on the bed. "Ive got a major headache, and I'm having trouble remembering certain things. It's a bit fuzzy."
Her brow furrowed as she tried to make sense of it all. "Matt, did Peter tell you anything about what happened?"
Matt sighed and looked at Eden, her heart was racing. And for the first time in a long time, he couldn't figure out if that was a good thing or a bad thing.
"What do you remember, Eden?"
"I remember too much. Last night Peter was telling me about this spell, but I already knew about the spell so I don't even know why he would even tell me that. I also remember him telling me that we had a connection...? What does that even mean, Matthew?"
Matt looks down at his lap trying to figure out the right words to say to Eden without confusing her even more.
Truth be told, Matt didn't forget.
He knew Peter the second he came to the door to take Eden out.
"What's that look for?" Eden asks.
Matt glanced up, meeting Eden's gaze with a hesitant smile. "It's nothing, really. I'm just trying to make sense of all of this myself."
He shifted uncomfortably on the bed, debating whether or not to reveal the full extent of his knowledge. Finally, he sighed, deciding that honesty was the best policy.
"Eden, there's something I need to tell you. Unlike everyone else, I didn't forget about Peter. I recognized him last night when he came to the door, and I know about your relationship with him — or at least, the relationship you had before the spell."
"How's that even possible? Strange did it so everyone forgot!"
Matt shrugged, a rueful expression on his face. "I know it doesn't make a lot of sense. But, for whatever reason, the spell didn't affect me the same way it did everyone else. Maybe it was a fluke, or because of my special abilities... I'm not sure."
It was Eden's turn to let out a sigh this time. She dropped her shoulders and shook her head, burying her hands in her face.
Matt watched as Eden processed the information, his heart aching. He gave her a moment to collect her thoughts, then spoke gently.
"Eden, I know this is overwhelming, but we'll figure it out together, I promise. If you're comfortable with it, maybe we can talk to Peter again—he might have some answers that can help clear things up."
He paused for a moment, waiting for her response. "I'm here for you, no matter what. We'll get through this together."
"I think there's someone else I need to talk to actually, before we go talk to Peter."
"Who?"
"Ben."
