𝑻𝑯𝑬 𝑫𝑨𝒀𝑺 seemed to drag on since Brian had come back into Christiana's life. It was as if the universe itself wanted her to acknowledge him, but how could she? She had no desire to talk to him, not after everything that had happened. Besides, she was busy—busy being a mom, busy trying to keep everything together.Today had been no different. She had just come back from the grocery store and Toys "R" Us with Jesse, who had picked out a new toy car for himself—a Subaru WRX STi, nearly identical to the one Christiana had driven years ago. It was one of those things that made her smile, a reminder of a different time, a different life.
"What do you want to eat tonight, baby?" Christiana asked, stepping through the door, balancing the bags and letting the fresh air from outside drift in.
"Uhh, macroni," Jesse answered with his usual enthusiasm, making Christiana chuckle. He never did say the full word "macaroni," but the way he said it was endearing.
"That's it? Nothing else?" Christiana asked, walking further into the house. She loved this place—had loved it since she moved when Jesse turned two. The extra space had been one of the best decisions she'd ever made. She felt like she could finally breathe.
"Yep," Jesse replied matter-of-factly, pulling off his shoes and running toward his toys.
"Well, I'll make you some macaroni. You go play with your toys," Christiana said, dropping the grocery bags on the floor. She began to make her way to the kitchen when Jesse's excited voice interrupted her thoughts.
"Wow, look at the flowers, Mom!"
Christiana turned, her gaze falling across the living room to the dining table, where a bouquet of flowers sat. She walked over to get a closer look. Pink carnations and baby's breath, tied with a dark green bow. The sight of them stopped her in her tracks.
She knew immediately who they were from. Only two people in the world knew what her favorite flowers were, and one of those people was gone. Even though she was still mad at him, a small, involuntary smile tugged at her lips. It was a simple gesture, but it meant something. He remembered.
