Part 32

We are in Kemi's house. Devesh and I are in her room. It's so silence and tensed. Devesh is angry but he doesn't say anything and Kemi is strange. She just sit on her bed and says nothing. I stand here and I look at this sad frame.

We hear the front door opening. We all look at Kemi, she doesn't even move. I can only see her chest move, she is sighly breathing. We stay like this a couple of minutes, none of us daring to look at Kemi.

She gets up and walk out the door, without a word. I tell her " It's gonna be okay." She doesn't even react but she keeps on walking away.

While we were alone, Devesh immediatly asked me " For how long have you been keeping this away from me ? "

" It doesn't matter Devesh."

Devesh seems so broke. I tell him " It's gonna be okay."

 He just mumbles " I never get to protect the ones I care about. "

I knew what he was refering to. " It's not the same and you know it."

" It is the same and I know it. She was suffering during years and I didn't see it ! "

" She was hiding it."

" This is what I am saying. I couldn't even protect her. I was a bad boyfriend now I am also a bad brother."

" I think we should pay attention to what she is telling to her dad." I said as I was getting out of her room.

I started to go downstairs, hidden, soundless. I see her, sitting on a chair in the kitchen, with her dad looking in the fridge. I now hear clearly :

" Dad ?"

"Yes, Kemi."

" When are you going back to Nigeria ?"

" Soon."

"Dad ?"

" Yes, Kemi."

" Why do you despise me ?"

He closes the fridge and looks at her. " I don't."

" Then why do you beat me ?"

He looks at her in total disbelief, without achieving to say a word. Kemi continues " Yeah, that's what I thought, you don't know too." getting up of her chair.

He grabs her wrists and says " I do know why, it's because you deserve it. You piece of shit. Coming in my house and lacking me of respect ?" He starts to scream, he slaps her. " I should have done the same as your mother."

I start to go upstair to go and get Devesh but I can still hear from there that Kemi is loosing her temper and she shouted " Yes, you should have done the same as her !"

I hear some screams and sounds.

Few seconds later we are downstairs with Devesh. I run toward Kemi who is on the floor, with blood running out of her cheek. Her father is in total disbelief and shout at me " What are you doing here ?"

Devesh comes and says harshly " Kemi, Jourdan get up." He turns toward her father and he comes closer to him " Now, hit me. Man to man." Kemi's dad is looking at Devesh and chuckles " What is that ? A rescue plan ?"

Devesh answers " I'm just asking you to act like a man and to don't hit someone weaker than you. Beating your girl ? Easy. But now beat me, because I can assure you that you will never ever lay a finger on her again."

Her dad laugh. " Come on, son. Maybe you're in love with my daughter but you don't want to get involve in this."

Devesh corrects " I'm not in love with her, I'm her brother. My duty is to protect her and this beating up thing has to stop now."

The man claunches his jaw " I'm not taking order from a silly kid who is coming to my house to make his laws. My house, my rules. I didn't give you birth, my daughter has NO BROTHER. So you take your shit and you leave my daughter here."

Devesh simply answers " I'm not leaving her here, Sir."

Her dad gives Devesh the death's look " I'm advising you one last time, kid. Get out of my house or I'll kick you out myself."

Devesh smiles and says " I'm not moving anywhere."

BAAAAM. Devesh receives a fist at his cheek. He fight back and the both men are now fighting. They are now on the floor, her dad giving so many punches to Devesh that I now feel bad for him but our friend keeps on fighting and he is now on top of her dad. He starts to strangle him and then stop. He looks at us and says " Kemi go and grab your stuffs, you're leaving this house."She runs upstairs.

Kemi's dad spits at Devesh.

Devesh says with disgust " You hit my sister and you thought that you could get away with it. You don't know me, no one hurts the ones that I love." He gives another fist at her dad.

Kemi is now dowstairs. We all get up, ready to go. But Kemi's dad got up too... And he attacked Devesh from behind. He fell on the floor harshly , his head is hurting, his eyes are closed. He doesn't move.

Kemi and I run towards him.
