Another month had gone by and my mom was still here. How awesome was that? This had never happened before. The bad thing was that I felt like the clock was ticking. More like a bomb was going to explode, whenever she announced that she was leaving. It felt like it was coming soon. Unfortunately.

Stacy's laughter was heard all throughout the house. Sasha's exhausted voice was too, only because she was chasing after my little niece.

That child was what? Like seven already? She had way too much energy. It made me think back at the time I was her age. Remembered how I ran and played at the playground, nonstop. The imagination I had. I loved my niece, I hoped she wouldn't lose that anytime soon.

"Riley, what do you say if I take Stacy and you out for ice cream?" mom offered.
Uh...

"That would be lovely but I'm not a child anymore," I excused myself nicely.

"No one is ever too old for ice cream," she claimed. Her eyebrows wiggled, "It'll be fun," there was so much excitement coming from her that I couldn't find myself to refuse twice.

"Alright but please don't treat me like a little girl," that was my one condition.

Mom pouted a little but her whole expression changed rapidly, "Fine, you've got a deal," she held her hand out. I sighed playfully. Making it official, we shook on it. "Stacy, we're going out for ice cream," mom shouted.

Stacy ran back in a heartbeat. "Right now?" she couldn't be more excited.

"Yes!" mom leaned down to her eye level. "Ask your mom if she wants to go."

"Thank you, grandma," Stacy wrapped her little arms around her neck. "I'm gonna ask," she released her and took off running.

Mom turned to me, "I'm still not used to being called grandma," she chuckled.

"Well you've never really been around much to hear it enough," I murmured.

"Riley, don't you make this a bitter afternoon," her hands rested on my shoulders. "Smile and enjoy this lovely day with your family," she requested.

"Incomplete family," I murmured, noting that dad wasn't here.

"Riley please," mom sighed. "He chose that woman," she remarked. I didn't need to be reminded of it. It was always on my mind, every fuckin' day. "It's best if you let it go. Don't you worry, one day he'll regret it but it'll be too late," she assured.

"Yeah whatever," I replied with a shrug, as if I didn't really care.

"Remember to always keep your chin up," she tapped my chin, making me smile.

Just to please her, I forced a smile. Seeing Stacy and Sasha turned it into a real one.

"You guys ready?" I asked, taking the tension off myself.

"Yes. Should we take my car?" Sasha asked.

"Yeah, I don't really feel like driving," I got out of that duty.

"Me neither," mom did the same.

"Alright then," Sasha grabbed her car keys.

We headed out the door.

At the ice cream shop, Stacy was being a hyper and crazy individual. So much that Sasha had to force her to sit down. Mom helped calm Stacy down. While they struggled with her, I went for another scoop of cookie dough ice cream.

"Anything else?" the employee asked.

"No, thanks," I smiled and took a napkin. Turning around, I bumped into someone. Some ice cream dripped onto my fingers. "Shit," I muttered through my teeth and wiped it off.
