Third Person P.O.V

Sitting on the hard and cold metal bench, Mia brought her knees up to her chest. Balled up in an overwhelming position. Her chin rested on her knees as she cried. There was another person in the cell with her. Though, she was keeping her distance by sitting on the ground. By the looks of it, she had been in there for at least a day. Mia did not want to ask, to not start any trouble in case the woman became offended.

Sorry for not being with you ,Riley, was all Mia could think about. Riley never left her mind. For the past three hours that she had been booked into the county jail, she kept wondering how Riley was. Even though there were small chances, almost impossible, Mia kept imagining Riley waking up during this time without her. It was heartbreaking to think that she wouldn't be there to welcome Riley back.

The other inmate cleared her throat, "Hey," she spoke cautiously, to not frighten Mia. She looked up from her knees, tears blurred her vision. So she cleaned her eyes dry, somewhat. "Do you need a tissue?" the woman asked in a considerate manner. Mia nodded. "Oh," the woman was taken by surprise. "I'm sorry, I wasn't expecting for you to say yes," she scratched the back of her head.

Mia sniffled, "It's okay."

Offering a tissue was the woman's way to start a conversation with Mia. Therefore, when Mia actually wanted one, she didn't know how to react to it. "I can ask a guard for one if you?" the woman offered.

Mia shook her head slightly, "No, it's okay," she refused politely. With tears forming in her eyes again. The crying just wouldn't stop.

The woman stood from the ground and made her way to the bench. Still, she kept some distance. "So, what are you here for?" She sounded curious. Mia wiped tears off her face and stayed silent. She thought about it. Due to her concern for Riley, she hadn't been thinking about the charges against her. Yes, she knew why she had been arrested but she hadn't wasted any time thinking about it. Riley filled all of her mind.

Mia sniffled, "A student at the high school that I teach at, accused me of sexual assault," she explained. Mia was not too sure whether she was doing the right thing by telling this woman but it seemed like she could trust her. After all, the woman appeared to be nice and concerned enough. It was better off to have a friend in jail than an enemy.

The woman's eyes widened a bit, "You're a teacher?" That's what she took from it. Mia nodded as tears ran down her face. Riley, she could not stop herself from thinking about her. The woman could see the amount of pain that Mia was going through. "I'm sorry," she was sympathetic. "I'm sure you didn't do it," the woman added.

Mia looked at her, surprised. "Really?"

The woman nodded, "uh huh," she assured. "If you would have then you wouldn't be crying like this. Besides, look at you, I don't think you have the need to force anyone into doing anything," she thought I'd be funny to toss a joke in, along with a compliment.

Mia smiled to know that the woman believed her. "Thank you." Mia figured the polite thing to do was to ask the woman why she was arrested. "Why are you in here?" She gave her attention to her. Struggling to keep Riley out of her mind for a moment.

The woman let out a sarcastic laugh. "For stabbing my boyfriend in the arm with a butter knife," she replied, which sort of frightened Mia. How sharp was that butter knife? she wondered. The woman noticed Mia's curious expression. "Trust me, when there's a lot of anger and will, a butter knife can do a lot," the woman joked once again, to ease the tension that had suddenly formed.

"Was he deeply injured?" Mia somewhat worried.

"Well, he bled and needed stitches," the woman said with a careless shrug. "But I swear, I only stabbed him because he deserved it," she justified, not wanting Mia to think any less of her. The woman looked down to her fidgeting hands. Suddenly, she became overwhelmed, "I was tired of his beatings," she mumbled out. She swallowed down hard.
