Who remembers their song? All of Me by John Legend
I walked down the school's hallway, heading to Ms. Damon's classroom. Classes hadn't started yet, giving us time to discuss the problem. This wasn't the best place for that, but I didn't know where she lived, leaving me no other choice but to confront her here.
When I turned the doorknob and confirmed that the door was locked, I took a step back. No problem. Knocking could solve that. More nervous than patient, I fidgeted with my hands as I waited for Ms. Damon to open the door. My fingers intertwined but then my arms crossed. I was too nervous. My heart beat increased. Yes, I was terrified of confronting her. After all, she helped put Mia in jail. That was upsetting. However, my anger had to be tamed. I had to remind myself that I was here to make amends with her, in order to help Mia.
The door opened but much to my surprise, it was not Ms. Damon. Another woman stood in front of me. In case I was in the wrong classroom, I glanced at the room number and confirmed that I was at the correct one.
"Where's Ms. Damon?" I asked.
"She's no longer teaching here," the woman replied. "I'm the temporary substitute teacher until the permanent teacher is hired," she explained.
Now what? I wondered while slightly biting on my bottom lip. Time was ticking with Mia in jail, and anything could happen. I had to find Ms. Damon before anything terrible could happen to Mia.
"Oh darn," I pursed my lips. "Do you know where I can find her?" I hoped.
"I'm not allowed to give that information to anyone," she dismissed.
"But she has my art portfolio," I insisted. "I don't know if you've heard about me, but I was in a coma and I really need that portfolio back," I added, hoping that would convince her.
"I'm sorry," she gave a genuine apologetic expression.
"Look, I haven't been back to school because I still can't really remember much," I lied.
"I heard about your memory loss, I'm sorry," she lamented but didn't seem to be budging.
"Thanks," I gave a half smile. "The doctor said that my art from class could help me remember," what a complete lie but hopefully, the substitute would fall for it. There was a change in her expression. It softened and became thoughtful. "Please, I really need that portfolio, but Ms. Damon has it," I pressured her. "If I don't get that portfolio back then I don't know how long I can go on with this frustrating feeling," I made myself sound helpless and overwhelmed.
Her eyebrows furrowed.
"You know what, I don't think there will be any problem if I give you her home address," she gave in! Oh my god, yes! I was brilliant. "I'll be right back, I'll write it down for you," she smiled before heading back inside the classroom. As soon as she was out of sight, I polished my nails, feeling accomplished. A minute later, she came back with a note. "Here," she handed it to me. I looked at the address. Perfect, it was not too far away.
As relieved as I was that I convinced her, it horrified me that she gave it to me. That was a violation. I know she was only trying to help me but what if I was lying? I mean, I was but what if my intentions were to hurt her? She was putting a teacher's life at risk. Not that I actually cared for Ms. Damon, if anything, I worried about her or any other irresponsible teacher giving Mia's address out to other students.
Anyway, I needed to focus on what mattered!
"Thank you so much!" I could almost hug her. She just made things much easier.
