Third Person P.O.V
Scrubbing the permanent stained floor with the rough sponge brush, Mia sighed. Exhaustingly, her eyes stung. Due to her hands being washed over with cleaning chemicals, she could not rub her eyes. Not that she was intending to anyways. Her eyes had enough, it hurt to wipe them. Dry patches appeared underneath her eyes, due to all the rubbing. For the past few days, that's all she had been doing. To keep herself awake. Maura could not be trusted. After the beating she took, she looked determined to get her revenge. So Mia didn't sleep much at night. To keep her guard up.
Iris made jokes to help Mia stay awake. They followed their daily routine. Whenever the chance was presented, Mia took 5 minute naps as Iris kept an eye out for the guards. As they did their chores. It helped Mia a lot that she had a friend to remind her to catch her meals on time. Go back to doing chores, as many as possible, in order to not be in the same cell as Maura. Then, go to sleep, with an eye open, to make sure that Maura wouldn't kill her in her sleep.
A yawn escaped from Mia as she remained on her knees and scrubbed the floor.
"You would think that she would leave you alone after the beating you gave her," Iris struggled to understand what exactly Maura wanted.
"She's bored and has nothing better to do," Mia shrugged, not really wanting to waste a thought on her.
"I mean yeah but isn't she worried about it happening again in front of the other women?" Iris found it amusing and wished she could witness it herself.
Mia stopped scrubbing for a moment to look at Iris, "I'm praying it doesn't get to that."
"But it would be awesome," Iris grinned, finding nothing wrong with it. In her opinion, Maura had it coming to her. After all the bullying she did on the other inmates. Especially on those who could not defend themselves. "How did you even learn to fight?" Curiosity filled Iris' eyes.
"I learned self defense from my brother," Mia answered, choosing her words wisely.
"You're sore but you don't have a scratch on yourself," Iris noted, examining her again. In case she missed something. "Did Maura not put up a good fight?" She wanted all the details.
Remembering the so-called fight, Mia couldn't help but to laugh at Maura's poor performance. Answering her question, Mia shook her head no. "She kept trying the same moves."
"Which are?" Eagerly, Iris wanted to know. In case she ever had to fight her off. Who better to tell her than the one who successfully beat her?
Amused, Mia chuckled, "If we get the chance, I'll teach you," she really meant it. Iris had been by her side and she didn't want anything to happen to her.
Mia was going to make sure to have Iris prepared for any attacks.
"You can't back down from it," Iris was up for the challenge. Mia began scrubbing. "Anything new about your sister?" She changed the subject. At the mention of Emery, Mia stiffened.
Pausing on the cleaning, Mia wiped her forehead with her arm. "She still hates me," her heart ached. Tears whelmed in her eyes. The situation with Maura had distracted her but it was all coming back to her. "I just wish she could understand."
Seeing that Mia was about to start crying, Iris quickly changed the topic. "What about Riley?"
A strand of Mia's hair came loose from the ponytail, falling over her face. She pulled it behind her ear. "I haven't even heard anything about her in the last two days," that made Mia feel even worse.
"Why don't you ask your lawyer next time he comes?" Iris suggested.
Shrugging in response, Mia also distressed, "I need to hear from her already." Her mind wandered all of the time. What if something horrible happened but no one wants to tell me? What if Riley didn't make it? Mia tormented herself with these thoughts.
