Chapter 18

Scarlett's POV:

This morning I didn't feel like getting out of bed. so when rose came to wake me up I just told her to let me sleep. I know that I shouldn't be sad and get out of bed, but I can't. Just a lot has happened in the space of a week and I don't know how to handle it. My mom's good at this stuff. I barely know how to parent an 8 year old, never mind a teenager. I don't know what I am doing. It doesn't help that I don't know maddie, I want to know her and I should know her but I dont. I only know who she was when she was 6 and now she's this amazing 15 year old who has grown up and isn't the same 6 year old I remember and I hate that. I hate that I don't know her. I know I shouldn't be lying in bed and that I should get up but I can't so...........yeah.

Maddie left the room when I finished my little speech. Shit! What do I do? Why didn't you think Scarlett? She's hurting too. She lost her mom. 

Colin came in our room and sat on the bed next to me, pulling me into his side. 

 "I don't know what to do" I whisper sobbing into his shoulder. I just want my Maddie.

 "I know honey. I know. Shh" he says softly, holding me.

 We stay like that for a bit. I must have fell asleep because when I woke up Colin was gone. I checked my phone for the time and it was 6pm. I slowly got out of bed and had a quick shower.

I make my way downstairs to find rose and colin sat at the dining room table.

 "Where's maddie" I ask sitting next to rose.

 "She went out. She said that she'll be home later" Colin says. I nod. It's a school night so I don't want her out too late and be tired for school tomorrow.

Rose puts spongebob on for us to watch whilst colin went and got some work done. All I could think about was Maddie. 

Scarlett😊: hey baby. Could you be home by 10:30? It's a school night and I don't want you to be tired xx.

Maddie❤: sure.

I nod at that even though she can't see me.

Maddie's POV:

James had texted me to say that he was here. I said a quick goodbye to rose and colin, then met with James.

 "I was going to bring my spare skateboard for you and then we could ride them" he said. I laughed.

 "Yeah that wouldn't work." I said. We was walking to the same hilltop we went to a few days ago except James had brought McDonald's with him.

 When we got there are we just Sat on this blanket that he brought and talked about school and the gossip. It was nice and the view just added to it.

We started to walk back since it was nearly 10. 

 "So what's on your mind?" James asked. I looked at him. 

 "What do you mean?" I asked confused.

 "You seem upset." 

 " oh I'm fine. I'm just still getting used to living here" I said.

 "What America?"

 "No with Scarlett. It's different and I don't really do well with changes" I answered honestly. I didn't feel like I had to lie to James.

 "Yeah. do you mind me asking. What even happened?" 

 " I don't even know myself. One minute she was there and the next she was saying goodbye to me and that she'll be back" 

 "And I'm guessing she wasn't?"

 " I was 6. " I said. He nodded and held my hand, smiling at me. It was still a hard topic to talk about especially since I don't even know the reason as to why she left and I think James could see that.

 "I only heard from her a couple years ago when I was 13" I said.

 "That must be hard, you know since you were so young" he said.

 " yeah but it was okay I had my aunts and my dad" I say wanting to change the subject. He must of noticed that because he started talking about how he got into skateboarding. We got to the gate outside the house.

 "I'll see you around mads" he said before kissing me on the cheek and walking away.

I walked into the kitchen wanting a drink.

 "Maddie. How are you honey?" Scarlett's mum (grandma, as she told me to call her when we met) asked me when I walked in. Scarlett and her was sat down at the breakfast bar.

 "I'm okay. You?" I said smiling at her as she pulled me into a hug.

 "I'm okay honey, been a bit busy with the garden but apart from that fine" I nodded and smiled, grabbing a bottle of water from the fridge.

 "Where did you go?" Scarlett asked.

 "Field, with a friend" I said. She nodded and looked away. What have I done now? Grandma looked at me and smiled noticing Scarlett's coldness. I nodded and said my goodnight before leaving.

I went to check on rose before I went to bed. She was fast asleep with her head at the bottom of her bed and her feet at the top end. I went and gave her a kiss on the head before going to say goodnight to Colin. He was sat in the office room ,next to roses room, working.

 "Night Colin" I said at the door. He turned around and smiled and said goodnight.

 I layed on my bed and just stared at the ceiling.

How the hell am I going to survive more months of this?
