Chapter 58

Charlie's POV:

~2019~

I was at the hospital signing paperwork with Abuela. I had recently lost my husband in a fire, he was a fighfighter and there was an accident. I had been putting off signing the papers but today was finally the day.

We had just about finished when Allie and Becca walked in. They had wanted to come with me but I didn't want it to be a full family outing so I just brought mum. so I'm a little confused as to why they were here right now.

 "What are you two doing here? Charlie said that she specifically didn't want you all to come" Abuela tells them. They shake their heads and sit beside us.

 "Matthew called. He said that it was an emergency" Allie tells us.

 "What? Is he okay? Is Maddie okay?" I ask them urgently.

 "I don't know he only told us to meet him here. He did sound a bit scared though and he was like rushing to hang up the phone." I look at Becca hoping for some kind of hint of what was going on but she just shrugs and said that she was told the same thing.

We wait for a few minutes, until Matthew walks in. Wearing a blood covered shirt. We all rush to him.

 "What's going on?" "Why are you covered in blood?" " Mathew, what's happened. " We all ask him.

 "Um.. It.. Was Maddie.... She's fine.. She's in surgery... They said that she'll be fine... She's going to be okay... They said that she'll be fine" Matthew tells us, his whole body shaking.

 "Matt, you need to tell us what's happened. Why's she in surgery" I ask him slowly.

 "She's going to be okay... They said that she'll be fine" he mumbles, mainly telling himself.

 "He's shaken up" Becca says pulling Matthew into a seat. I nod and sit beside him.

 "They said that she'll be fine" he repeats quietly .

Abuela stands up and heads towards one of the nearest doctor, probably asking what's happened, later coming back.

 "They said that she has two gunshot wounds, both in the chest. The surgery should be done in a few hours. They said that she was shot." abuela tells us, saying the last part in a hushed tone.

 "She's been shot?" I ask.

 "Matthew, you need to tell us what happened. Who shot her?" Allie asks him.

 "I don't know. the police have got him. She's going to be okay. She has to be okay" he tells us.

 "Why? How did he get in the house? Where were you?" Abuela asks him.

 "I don't know. I was downstairs. She had just went upstairs to get her teddy, you know the little bear that Scarlett got her. She just went to get her teddy. She has to be okay. I can't lose her... I can't lose her" he says crying into mum's arms.

 "Scarlett" Allie repeats.

 "What? What about her?" I ask her.

 "She needs to know. I can call her now" Allie says going to stand up and taking her phone of her pocket.

 "No." Matthew says. 

 "No?" Allie asks.

 "No. She's not even in the country and the last thing I need is having to explain to an already traumatised Maddie, is why her mother just randomly popped out of nowhere. Do not call her until I have figured things out and we know maddie is okay"

Allie tries to get more sense out of Matthew but he's still shaken up and won't say anything else.

 How can someone shoot a little girl? I mean how did they even get into the house?

My train of thoughts are interrupted by a doctor walking over to us.

 "Mr Smith, Madeline has been moved to a private room, she's okay. Surgery went well. The paediatric doctor will explain everything that happened during the procedure when you get there." 

We follow the doctor to Maddie's room. She's attached to wires and tubes. She looks so small just lying there. Seeing her like this makes me want to just want hold her and tell her that everything will be okay.
