"Look, I did what I thought was right."

THE NEXT DAY

I Picked up Nancy, and we set out for school together. As we neared the school parking lot, something caught our attention—Barb's car was absent from its usual spot. Nancy and I exchanged puzzled glances, initially dismissing it as a possibility that Barb might be running late.

Entering the bustling school hallway, we weaved through the crowd of students. I took my notes from my locker while Nancy and Steve talked. I acted like I didn't notice, then we headed to class.

Approaching our classroom, we noticed the empty seat where Barb usually sat.

"Hmm, that's strange," Nancy remarked, a furrow forming on her brow.

"Yeah, maybe she's just not feeling well or had something come up," I suggested, attempting to normalize the situation.

AT LUNCH

Nancy and I sat on either side of Steve after scanning the hall for Barb.

"Hey, Tommy," Nancy inquired, attempting to gather information. "When you left, did you see Barb?"

"What?" Tommy narrowed his eyes.

"Barbra," I added, trying to provide more context. "She's not here today."

"I seriously have no idea who you're talking about," Tommy snickered. I sighed and rolled my eyes at him.

Steve looked at me, recognizing that we were serious. He then turned to Tommy, saying, "Come on, don't be an ass, man. Did you see her leave last night or not?"

"No," Tommy replied, casually eating his lunch. "She was gone when we left."

"Probably couldn't stand all that moaning," Carol chimed in, rolling her eyes as she shoved vegetables into her mouth.

"Oh, Steve! Oh, Steve! Oh, Steve," Carol mockingly moaned as Tommy banged his fist on the table, making me look down and purse my lips.

"Listen... I'm sure she's fine. She's probably just... she's probably just, like, skipping or something," Steve said, attempting to reassure us.

I just stared blankly at my food, the unease refusing to dissipate.

"Yeah," Nancy said, forcing a small smile. "Yeah, probably."

***

"Come on, come on, come on..." Nancy muttered as she dialed Barb's mom.

"Hi, uh, Ms. Holland, it's Nancy," Nancy said, glancing at me.

"Good. I'm good," Ms. Holland replied. "Um, I was just wondering, uh, is Barb there?" I waited for Nancy to sigh in relief, but her expression turned more fearful.
