The reserve guard who was sent to this part of the countryside was young. The history lessons that were included in the training were still fresh in his memory and he knew what had happened in this area towards the end of the war and afterwards. He studied everything. The ruins of the old laboratory were destroyed but there were signs of where it originally stood,
the place where the drug was discovered,
the place that Yunlan's ancestor wanted to expose,
the place where Da Qing was held prisoner,
the place where Chu had lost five friends,
the place where Shen Wei was held and nearly died,
And the place where the first power transfer happened.
The doorway between the worlds was quite close but hidden in the trees, not really visible unless you knew where to look and this young guard positioned himself in the forest, with a clear view of anyone who was using the doorway.
Chang Cheng was quiet but confident in his skills as a guard, he had passed all his training courses and was placed in the reserves to gain experience before he would be considered capable enough to join the first line squad who protected Black Robe. This was his first actual assignment and all he had to do was watch a dormant doorway but if it became active, report it and stay hidden until help arrived. He was one of the guards who wore gloves all the time because he was sensitive to touch, he could see memories and the gloves were protection for himself and whoever he was with at the time. There were other guards who also had gifts that needed to be contained but were more dangerous than Chang Cheng.
The noise of feet snapping twigs brought him out of his daydreaming and he watched as the people walked towards the closed doorway and waited. They looked human but in a daze, sleep walking, all men. Some were smartly dressed and some in old clothes just standing and waiting patiently for someone while their kidnappers kept scanning the area for any movement. Chang Cheng knew that he had to report this but couldn't move without being seen, so he calmed his mind and stayed hidden while he mentally searched for another like minded person who would hear him.
Lin Jing was having a crappy day, it's not often he thought in those terms but today was exceptional. Even with his desk away from the others, he was still having interfering thoughts keeping him from his work. Zhu Hong was in a foul mood with everyone, similar to Sha Ya and he hated it when those two managed to have their biological cycle run in tandem. One wrong word was all it took and Lin Jing could hear the venomous thoughts from both of them.
On top of that, there was someone else sending messages and his headache was increasing by the minute. Maybe if he understood what they were talking about it would be better but he didn't, so he tried to grin and bear it as he took one of the reports to Chu to be signed.
