Yunlan was a good cook but nervous about having to prepare a meal for someone he didn't know, also he would be the first guest in this new house and he wanted to impress him. The kitchen would be the best place for them to eat, any other room seemed inappropriate, too big for just the two of them and he would be able to show him the library after they'd eaten. He hurried to finish his food preparation leaving everything in the small fridge and ran upstairs to bathe and change before Shen Wei's arrival.
Outside, the visitor sat in his car nervously waiting another five minutes before he could approach the house that he hadn't been in for a very long time, not since his partner had died. He didn't really have missing family and was not in the habit of lying but he needed a reason to meet Zhao Yunlan after finding out that he had bought his house. This is going to be more difficult than he imagined but Shen Wei knew that he could not rush into another relationship, he would need to be patient and wait for Yunlan's emotions to catch up with his.
The house was going to be full of memories, making it extremely difficult for him not to confuse this Yunlan with his lost love and as he approached the mansion, he questioned himself about turning around and driving away, but he didn't. Yunlan answered the door with his usual relaxed behaviour and invited Shen Wei in, as he admired the dark blue suit, very smart with black polished shoes this time, not new but comfortable.
"I thought we could eat before I show you some of the house, come through to the kitchen, it's less formal, I hope you like fish, it's very light even if you have had something earlier." Yunlan asked and lead Wei through to the kitchen at the back of the house.
Shen Wei would have eaten anything that Yunlan had prepared for him and he already knew where the kitchen was, but willing to be lead there as if it was the first time.
"Fish sounds lovely, I hope I'm not putting you to too much trouble?"
"No of course not, I love cooking, and its a change having to prepare a meal for someone other than myself. Take a seat."
Wei sat at the table watching as Yunlan cooked the fish and added seasoning while the vegetables were being kept warm, already prepared before his arrival to save time. He offered to make tea for both of them afterwards but Yunlan refused his help, saying that he was a guest, but he could chooses which kind he would like, he had several in the cupboard. Wei settled on jasmine tea after the meal and complimented his host on his skills in the kitchen, giving them the chance to relax and talk.
"Do you mind me asking, what kind of work are you involved in?" Yunlan asked as he watched Wei's reactions.
"I'm a lecturer, part time at the university,Ancient History. And yourself, have you always been a detective?"
"Yes, I worked my way up, it was difficult at times, but I like where I am now. What about yourfamily, 100 years is a long time?" He asked him, wondering if it was the truth.
