"Mother."

"Aleksander," she greeted me.

It has been a while.

"I suppose," she shrugged, "Were you ever going to tell me I have a granddaughter?"

The only person who could render me speechless.

The corners of her mouth moved upward, but there was no smile.

"Poor child. Another miserable eternity to add to our bloodline."

"She is special, mother. With the power of shadows and the sun..."

"She is a powerful weapon, is she? Another person to spend eternity with you?"

Again, silence. I did not know what to say.

"Believe it or not, Aleksander, just because we are eternal, it doesn't mean we are here to entertain you."

I perked up at that.

"What are you getting at, Mother?"

She sighed and rolled her eyes. That brought me back. I was never smart enough. Never good enough.

"The child came and spoke to me."

I gulped.

"What did she want from you?"

"She told me of her conversation with you, her desire to end..."

"I said no."

"Oh, I know, child. And she was very distraught. I hope you're happy."

"I am."

Again, she sighed.

"Aleksander," she started.

"No, I will not hear of this."

"Aleksander," she tried again.

"No! She is my child. She is mine! Not yours, mine! You will not... you cannot!"

I could feel the shadows threatening to break loose. My field of vision was losing focus.

"ALEKSANDER!"

Immediately, the shadows withered.

Her tone softened something that had only happened a handful of times. I could count them on my hand.
