The next morning, the circus grounds felt strangely silent. The vibrant colours and sounds of laughter that were a constant last night were replaced with an unsettling tension.
Detective Connie Black arrived early, ready to delve deeper into the unfathomable world of the circus.

Her first stop was the performers' trailers, which were neatly arranged in a large semi circle behind the big red and white tent, adjacent to the stalls of the funfair. Each trailer bore a uniquely different personality representing their owners. All painted with whimsical designs that reflected their act and their identities. Connie was drawn to Madame Hattie's trailer, as it was her ominous premonition that had raised curious suspicions.

Madame Hattie, dressed in flowing robes and a head scarf, welcomed Connie inside. Her small trailer was intimate and the space was adorned with trinkets, incense, and an array of crystal balls. The fortune teller's eyes were mysterious and intense.

"I knew something terrible was going to happen," Madame Hattie whispered, her voice filled with conviction. "I saw it in the cards and the stars. But I did not see the face of the one responsible."

Connie glimpsed down at the tarot cards and studied them to see if she could obtain anything from them. They depicted a sinister figure with a dagger, which sent shivers down her spine. Madame Hattie may appear eccentric, but she seemed genuinely distraught at the loss of Ralph Ortiz. Was there more to this relationship than just seeing the demise of her ringmaster Connie pondered.

"Where were you when Mr Ortiz was found dead" Connie asked her, not messing with her words "I was in my trailer reading my cards, I was waiting for my queue as to enter back on stage for the finale." Madame Hattie replied.

Next, Detective Black paid a visit to Marco the Magnificent, his trailer was a treasure trove of illusions, from playing cards and disappearing doves to a variety of magical props. Then there were the chains, belted jackets and daggers that show the darker side of the escapologists act. Marco, with a charismatic smile, greeted her with a flourish.

"Detective, I had no reason to harm Ortiz," Marco claimed, juggling balls defiantly. "Our rivalry was part of the show, nothing more. I may have wanted the spotlight solely on me, but not like this. I was in the cannon ready to take my final mission when the screams from the crowd alerted me that something was a miss."

Connie was inclined to believe him, at least for now. As an illusionist, Marco knew how to create diversions and misdirection, making it harder to ascertain the truth. She knew she would need to play the long game with Marco to see if he would trip himself up.

Finally, Detective Black approached Bella's trailer, finding the tightrope walker practising balancing on a thin wire stretched across her living space. Her bravery coupled with her grace and poise were apparent even in this very confined space.

Bella spoke with determination, "I wanted to leave the circus, Detective. But I would never resort to murder. Mr Ortiz held me to my contract, but I was looking for legal ways out. What he wanted from me was unfair."
Connie was waiting for more "I will be honest," Bella continued "the past six months Ralph and I, never agreed on much to do with my act as we never saw eye to eye. It's certainly made my future clearer now he's out of the picture." Bella stated.

"Where were you at the time of discovering Mr Ortiz's lifeless body?" Connie asked with assertion.
"I was making my way up the ladder in the centre circle, climbing up to the roof of the big top to be ready for the spectacular showstopper." Bella responded staunchly.

As Connie left Bella the Brave's trailer she couldn't shake the feeling that each suspect had a motive but equally a certain level of sincerity in their claims of innocence. Connie was beginning to find out even more how the circus was a world of smoke and mirrors. Where secrets could easily be concealed behind the bright lights and dazzling performances.

Her investigation had only just began and as she needed to uncover the truth behind the web of deceit that shrouded Mr Ortiz's murder. The answer lay hidden in the realm of the extraordinary, and Detective Black was passionate, no matter how elusive it might be to unveil them.
