After a long night of questioning, Detective Black returned home to her humble little bungalow, set in a quiet cobbled street in Haven. Set back from the hustle and bustle of the towns busy square, and the opposite side of town from the chaos that was unfolding under the big top. She sat down at her desk that was nestled in a dark corner of her living room to review her case notes and begin to prioritise her next steps. The circus murder mystery was an ever growing puzzle that needed her sharp mind and her eye for details to be at the peak of her powers to solve. She was aware that following up multiple leads and witnesses would require revisiting many of the performers. Connie began to piece together each of their stories to see where they overlapped or indeed where there were glaring gaps.
First she knew she needed to revisit Miss Luna Alvarez, Detective Black cut her last visit short as she had spotted Marco the Magnificent who had evaded Detective Black until that moment. She wanted to understand why she was missing performances due to her health. Could anyone prove her whereabouts at the time of the murder, she had a clear motive after recently finding out she was being forced to leave the circus by Ralph Ortiz, as she was being replaced by Madame Felicity Fontaine. A visit to see the Circus doctor was in order, she believed as he should provide answers on Miss Alvarez's health.
She wanted to speak with Mr Victor Miguel too, his close bond with Luna and his protective nature towards her instantly made him a valid suspect. Mr Miguel would do anything for Luna and what lengths would he take the promise he made her mother to on the discovery Miss Alvarez was being forced to abandon her dream?
She wanted to meet up with Rosa Lombardi, Marco the Magnificent's mother, who Connie believed was the ticket master. With a mysterious person seen by the ticket booth before the show had began, the deep routed rivalry between Marco and Mr Ortiz, and Mrs Lombardi encouraging Marco to visit Dr Roundhouse in Haven all needed to be explained as Connie believed they're certainly all linked and could that link even go one step further and link them to the murder of their Ringmaster.
She was planning a visit to speak with Ms Jessica Delights before the commotion of finding the Bauer twins pulled her away from this visit. Her name had popped up more than once in conversation about formerly being the trainer and choreographer for The Carnival of Curiosity Circus before Mr Ortiz had cut this role short. Detective Black was hoping to find out why this happened, but more importantly she was another performer who had a connection with Mr Ortiz, someone who could provide key pieces of information to crack the case.
Finally she knew she wanted to speak with Bella the Brave, as there is a clear motive, strong factual evidence provided by Mr Harrison, a solicitor in Haven and from Bella herself. Did she really take the contractual issue into her own hands to break free from the circus to head back home to Portugal.
As she prepared to go to sleep, her mind was still racing with questions and leads. The fact no murder weapon has been located either caused some concern. The investigation was leading down a long winding path that needed patience to reach the end which Detective Black was determined to see out.
In the morning, Detective Black was ready to head back over to the station to continue her interrogation of Felix and Sofia Bauer. Connie had hoped that separating the twins over night would cause cracks and affect their spirit and morale. Thus increasing the chances that one of them would be keen to reveal more about their disappearance.
Before Detective Black had reached her front doorway, still finishing her toast from breakfast, she received a call from her colleague to confirm that she could now head to the circus to search Mr Ralph Ortiz's trailer.
She had gone through the necessary legal process to secure the warrant and was now keen to reach the big top to see what clues she would find.As Detective Black reached the circus and stood in the courtyard of the trailers, a sense of anticipation and uncertainty filled the air as she approached the locked door. Her footsteps were careful and echoed softly as she climbed the trailers steps and unlocked the door with caution. Knowing that within its confides lay the potential key to unravel the mysteries surrounding Mr Ortiz and the shadows that hung over the Carnival of Curiosity. Hoping to uncover key details about his life and the motives behind his murder.
The door creaked open, revealing a dimly lit and a deathly cold interior. Connie's flashlight pierced the darkness as her eyes followed its trail around the room intently before cautiously entering his home. The air inside was heavy with a scent of old books and a faint hint of perfume. It was a peculiar mixture that hinted at the world within.
Connie began to explore the space, her heart raced with anticipation. What would she find within these walls? Clues about Mr Ortiz's past and plans for the future were some of the secrets she was hoping that lay concealed in here.
Her search took her through the small, meticulously organised living area, with photos, mementos, books and a well worn diary. The diary caught her attention immediately and flicked through its pages revealing Mr Ortiz's important meetings and key dates. Miss Felicity Fontaine's Arrival, Solicitors Meeting and Mr Rodrigo Appointment were some of the recorded entries that leapt out at her.
She placed this straight into her bag to inspect this in greater detail back at the station to see what else it could reveal.
Unexpected truths began to unravel as she continued her search. Letters, notes and many photographs shed light on Mr Ortiz's family and personal connections and a complex web of relationships within the circus community. There were intimate revelations about his struggles and aspirations, showing a side of him that very few had seen.
The more Connie searched his trailer which on the inside appeared so much larger than anticipated, the more she uncovered his life was far from simple. He had dreams, fears and a past that had left an indelible mark on him. This was a small glimpse into his character that was filled with unexpected twists and turns.
As the trailer began to yield its secrets, Connie couldn't help but feel a growing sense of sympathy and understanding for Ralph whose life had been cut so cruelly short.
