The case needed to unravel itself and seeking out Madame Hattie seemed the only logical route that Connie could focus on. The morning arrived with a heavy blanket of mist cloaking the town lending an eerie stillness to the usually bustling town square. As she approached the circus grounds, the sky, a canvass of muted greys and somber blues, held the weight of impending rain. This matched the mood of Detective Black as she knew she was going to unearth dark times of years gone by. She knew she was asking a lot from Madame Hattie, recalling events from a tragedy where fellow performers lost their lives so soon after the loss of Ralph Ortiz. The rawness however, couldn't prevent the detective from seeking answers that could help her find the suspect for the murder of her ringmaster.

With this fresh devastation, Detective Black was keen to speak with Madame Hattie to find out what became of this tragedy. She wanted to understand what led to the incident that occurred 17 years ago in the small town of Riverdale in America.

The urgency showed by Detective Black to unearth the mysteries concealed within Mr Ortiz's belongings propelled Connie to seek clarity from Madame Hattie.

As Connie approached Madame Hattie's trailer, a sense of anticipation mingled with apprehension. Knocking on the door, she awaited Madame Hattie's response, eager to delve into the ambiguous past that had emerged from the old newspaper contents discovered in Mr Ortiz's possessions.

Madame Hattie greeted Connie with her unusual aura of mystique, her gaze harbouring an inkling of curiosity upon seeing Connie's earnest demeanour. Inviting Connie inside her trailer, Madame Hattie's gaze flickered toward the material Connie held-photographs and clippings that held the secrets of bygone days.

With a blend of reverence and trepidation, Connie broached the topic, laying the retrieved artefacts upon the table. The photograph depicting Madame Hattie alongside Mr Ortiz and another younger familiar figure held a cryptic significance. The accompanying newspaper clippings chronicled a devastating fire that had cast pall over a previous circus tour in Riverdale, shrouded in lingering questions of tragedy and mystery.

Connie's questions echoed through the small space, probing into the ties that bound Madame Hattie, Mr Ortiz, and a past that lay enshrouded within these relics. The conversation danced around the nuances of their shared history, unraveled through the lens of memories and associations that had weathered the trials of time.

Madame Hattie, the keeper of secrets veiled in the riddles, unraveled some threads of the enigma, shedding light on connections that spanned years. Her cryptic responses hinted at a past intertwined with Mr Ortiz and echoes of a shared history that resonated within the confides of the circus.

With the mysterious photograph laid on the table, Detective Black's eyes met Madame Hattie's, earnestly seeking confirmation.

"Madame Hattie," Connie began her tone measured yet quite insistent, "this second boy in the photo with you and Mr Ortiz... is he Marco the Magnificent? And if so, can you confirm the nature of your relationship with Marco and his family?"

Madame Hattie's enigmatic aura softened momentarily, as she was shuffling her tarot cards frantically. A flicker of recognition glimmering in her eyes as she traced the lines of the photograph. "Yes, dear detective, that young lad indeed is Marco," she confirmed with a subtle nod, her voice carrying a hint of nostalgia.

Detective Connie pressed on, "And could you shed light on the connection between Marco's family and Ralph's family? Where are you connected? I've heard whispers of a family tie between Marco and Ralph."

Madame Hattie paused, her gaze drifting into the hazy depths of memories past. "Ah the intricacies of a family, woven threads both visible and hidden," she mused. "Marco Lombardi and Ralph Ortiz, yes again you are right... they were stepbrothers, once intertwined in a family bond."

With measured words, Madame Hattie unraveled the delicate threads that bound their families together, detailing the steps that had once joined their paths. Her revelations painted a picture of familiar ties that had blossomed and, in time, been fragmented by the diverging trails of life.

Detective Black absorbed Madame Hattie's recount of their family history, the intricate tapestry of relationships weaving a narrative that connected the lives of the performers in ways yet to fully comprehend. Madame Hattie's insights had began to illuminate a history that entangles familiar bonds beginning to shape their lives.
