Connie continued, her mind abuzz with Madame Hattie's uncovering of the family bonds and the circus ties. The remnants of the Circus Chronicle clippings, with their tales of tragedy and loss, hung heavy in the air, begging for elaboration.

"Madame Hattie," Connie's voice, a soft inquiry, "the old newspaper articles spoke of a harrowing fire that ravaged a circus, claiming multiple lives and leaving behind a trail of devastation and unanswered questions. Could you shed any light on this tragic event?"

Madame Hattie's stare fixed on the distant horizon, her mind retracing the memories etching in the shadows of the past. "Ah, that inferno," she began delicately, her words trailing into the depths of recollection. "It was a night cloaked in flames, a night where the circus's soul was seared by the inferno's wrath."

She narrated the haunting tale, with the assistance of her crystal ball, she painted a vivid canvass of an evening tainted by the fire's relentless hunger, recounting how the circus was engulfed in a blaze that devoured lives and dreams alike. "The flames spared none," she continued, her voice tinged with sorrow, "consumed performers, animals, and the innocent joys that once danced under the big top. We lost so much. Our friends, our possessions and our homes. The devastation lasted for months after, we nearly lost everything."

Detective Black listened intently, her curiosity piqued. "The missing child mentioned in the articles," Connie pressed on, "was it Mr Ortiz?"

Madame Hattie's gaze met Connie's, a fleeting moment of melancholy flashing in her eyes. "Yes, dear, sorry, Detective, that boy was indeed Mr Ortiz," she revealed solemnly. "His father, Lorenzo, sought for him tirelessly for the few hours that proceeded the blaze. The chaos of that night fractured lives in ways only tragedy can, he was beside himself. When he found that his wife, Hilda Olsen, was announced later that evening as one of the performers that tragically lost her life to the inferno, he was was engulfed in rage and devastation."

Connie's thoughts swirled, connecting the fragmented pieces of the past. "And Lorenzo," she probed gently, "he was the one found in the river after crashing through the bridge barrier?"

Madame Hattie nodded, her expression reflecting the weight of those bygone days. "Yes, Lorenzo's fate met a tragic end, claimed by the rivers embrace after a fateful collision, that was driven by the devastating loss of his wife Hilda, the belief it had claimed the life of his son Ralph and his home scorched by flames." She confirmed, "We all wondered if it was just all too much and the pain that engulfed his body had drove him to the depths of no return, there was no way to escape." The echoes of that turbulent past lingering in the somber air of the present.

Detective Black clearly affected by the horrific recount of this tragedy told by Madame Hattie wanted to steer the conversation away from the somber mood created. "Tell me about Rosa Lombardi and Lorenzo Ortiz's marriage and life before Hilda and Ralph?"

Madame Hattie, with a nostalgic gleam in her eyes, recounting the enthralling tale of Rosa Lombardi and Lorenzo Ortiz, two passionate star crossed performers whose lives intertwined in a tapestry of love and circus magic that created a special connection with an incredible spark.

"Rosa Lombardi and Lorenzo Ortiz," Madame Hattie began, her voice carrying the resonance of cherished memories, "were true artists of the circus, their bond forged atop the soaring heights of the trapeze. Their breathtaking acts, with daring and graceful stunts, enraptured audiences, painting the sky with their seamless artistry."

She painted a vivid picture of their shared journey and just like their act that soared high, so did their relationship and they soon became Mr and Mrs Ortiz. How their mesmerising performances led them to dream beyond the bounds of existing circuses. "Their passion for the extraordinary led them to envision something beyond the realms of a traditional circus," Madame Hattie continued now back to her evanescence self, as she was circling two crystals in the palm of her hand. "Together, they set forth to create their masterpiece, the Carnival of Curiosity Circus, where wonder and awe took centre stage to welcome guests from all over the world to be transfixed by their magic and illusions."

Their circus became a beacon of marvels drawing crowds from far and wide. "The Carnival of Curiosity was a testament to their love, vision and talent," Madame Hattie was reminiscing almost like she was in a trance of wonder, "a spectacle where the impossible became reality, every gasp echoed the magic they wove together."

Madame Hattie's face suddenly turned gloomy, her demeanour sunk and her voice softened as she revealed the turmoil within their once inseparable bond. "The tale took an unexpected turn when challenges emerged, within there idyllic partnership. Yet, as fate would have it the skies of their happiness were eclipsed by storms," she muttered pensively. "Love turned to anguish as the fabric of their union frayed like a trapeze net, tested by trials unforeseen."

The entangled story of Rosa Ortiz nee Lombardi and Lorenzo Ortiz unfolded like a canvas painted with both the brilliance of their love and shadows of their conflicts leaving Detective Black captivated by the layers of emotions and complexity of their intertwined destinies.

Madame Hattie stared into her glowing crystal ball as she elaborated. "These storms were escalated at the unexpected pregnancy that brought both joy and unforeseen complications to Rosa and Lorenzo Ortiz's life."

Detective Black asked, "And their son was?"

"Their son brought them magnificent joy as the arrival of Marco added a new chapter to their story, but it also brought a shift in dynamics within their circus world." Madame Hattie went on, "Rosa cherished motherhood, after taking a little while to adjust, and doted on young Marco excited about his future in the circus and what talents he would posses. Lorenzo's responsibilities as a father did not detract him from the circus's leading figure, which compelled him to remain dedicated to its operation and the upward trajectory they were heading. He continued to lead performances, managing the Carnival of Curiosity while Rosa tended to their growing child Marco."

Madame Hattie delved deeper into the history and turbulence that was soon to ascend, "As Marco reached the tender age of just four years old, a disquieting revelation rocked their once unbreakable bond. Lorenzo's involvement with their Danish trampolinist, Hilda Olsen emerged, casting shadows over the harmony of their family."

"Rosa seemed torn, between her devotion to Marco and the disintegration of her relationship with Lorenzo and she found herself at a crossroads. The cracks in their marriage deepened as the repercussions over the coming weeks and months, we all felt the reverberations of Lorenzo's affair as it unraveled threatening the very foundation of the Carnival of Curiosity."

The circus, once a testament of their shared dreams, became a stage for personal turmoil and discord. The once bright future of their family and circus empire now stood on uncertain grounds.

Amidst the tumult caused by Lorenzo's affair with Miss Hilda Olsen, an unexpected turn of events shattered the fragile peace within their family.

"Rosa had discussed with me that she was starting to contemplate forgiving her husband Lorenzo and moving past their troubles," Madame Hattie announced, "however, detective, fate threw Rosa a daunting curveball which caused great heartache once again. Rosa had found out that Hilda Olsen had fallen pregnant, and amid the turbulence of Rosa and Lorenzo's strained relationship this proved pivotal. It acted as the catalyst, igniting an intense confrontation between the pair."

The revelation of this new chapter intensified the discord, reignited old wounds, driving the wedge deeper into their already fractured marriage to the extent it became extinct. In the throes of despair and desolation a heartbroken Rosa made a life altering decision.

"She was faced with an unendurable situation, she knew she had to protect herself and Marco. She was fuelled by emotions and the weight of betrayal, Rosa took the necessary steps and left the circus."

Gathering her courage, she fled the Carnival of Curiosity in the dead of night, taking Marco with her. "She knew she was leaving behind the only real life she knew. The circus performers she called her family and the show she helped create. Her dreams evaporated as she took the necessary steps to safe guard herself and Marco. She never returned." Madame Hattie said with a chilling tone in her voice.

Rosa Ortiz had chosen another path, a different life, of seclusion and anonymity to shield herself and Marco from the turmoil that had engulfed their world. This decisive move marked the definitive end to Rosa and Lorenzo's shared dreams.

Detective Black began to wonder how Rosa was now back at the circus she vowed she would never return too....
