Season 1 Episode 5

Aya POV

I eventually mustered the confidence to turn on my phone after waking up, but I immediately regretted it when I noticed the slew of missed calls. My heart fell when I discovered that practically all of my coworkers had called me while I was going through the call records.

I determined to phone at least one of them back. To find out what was wrong.

"Where have you gone?!?" Alorica's worried voice rang forth. "Ms. Horus is tearing the place apart because you aren't here."

"What?" I inquired, astonished. "Where is she?"

"She departed not long ago, making a point of threatening us about not keeping the office party."

"I quitted."

"What?! Why?! Are you insane?"

I rolled my eyes, knowing full well that I was nuts. I was stupid to quit.

"I know I'm dumb. But it's not like I have a choice. My family need my presence."

"Did you inform them that your employment will be jeopardized?"

"No, they didn't give me an opportunity, and I can't tell them how much I quit the job that's been feeding them."

"You have to return." Her tone was almost imploring. Believe me, I want to return, but I doubt I can convince Darius that I want my job back.

"Without you, she's practically blind." She stated.

"It doesn't look that she is." I let out a snort.

"Look, all I have to do is send an email describing what occurred. If I don't get the job back, I'm going to be a roasted turkey."

"I just hope she doesn't hire another assistance."

"Come on, Darius is wealthy, strong, and attractive; getting a new assistant is like scooping up snow from the road." I let out a sigh. "I'll attempt to contact her back, which is something I didn't want to do." She'll still be pleading with me to return, even if I've only just arrived."

Hearing Abiba's voice at the doorway, I startled. "You're awake, dinner is ready."

"I'll call you back later, Alorica."

"Listen, if she says to come back, just do it. You need the money more than you need your family."

I sucked. I didn't respond. I end the phone call.

"Is it work?" Abiba inquired, her dark iris on me.

"It's just a pal." From the workplace. "She's simply keeping an eye on me."

"Come on, dinner is ready, and everyone is ready."

"I'll be there. Just let me wash up."

**************

Something about gathering with family for a delicious meal makes my heart sing. The table was piled high with side dishes, dessert, and a big roasted chicken in the center. I know I'll be returning to the city with at least 20 pounds on my tummy.

"Hello, guys." I grinned as I brushed Tommy's curly hair, which he inherited from his father. I followed them around expecting to find their father, but I didn't.

"Where has Mickey gone?" I inquired, perplexed.

"Well, if you were here, you would have known Mickey and Abiba were divorced." I looked at Abiba, stunned, and she turned away.
