Season 1 Episode 11
Aya POV
"3, 2, 1. Yayyy!" We shouted when Abida plugged in the light and the Christmas tree lit up. The light bulbs illuminate the lovely blue and white decoration. My eyes trailed up to the star, which shone so bright, it dazzled my eyes.
"It's lovely." I muttered. My tears welled up with longing for a Christmas like this. "Are you all OK, butterfly?" Darius inquired, and she drew me down alongside her on the couch. "It's been a long since I've seen a Christmas like this, you know. Some of my Christmases were spent working or studying.
"It's just a Christmas tree." She smirked. It wasn't just any ordinary Christmas tree. Looking around, I saw that everyone was content and chatting. We comes together as one.
"So! It's Secret Santa time!" My mother marveled when she picked up a brown bag.
"What on earth is that?" Darius inquired. It makes me question whether she's never celebrated Christmas with her family. However, I never heard her mention having a family, so I'll have to inquire later.
"You take a name from the sac and buy them a present." In a nutshell, I explained. There was more to secret Santa than merely providing a gift.
"Bullshit." She let out a snort. "You'd best become involved." I demanded, casting a sidelong glance at her.
"So, the estimated amount of money this year is fifty bucks. If you want to buy something for more than $50, that's OK."
"Don't buy me a pen." I said.
"Take whatever you can get." Athen growled. My mother began passing the bag around, and each of us chose a folded piece of paper.
"Remember guys, no one tell who they are buying a gift for."
Darius rolled her eyes and seized the bag from me, pulling out a piece of paper. Her eyebrow shot up as she unreel it. "There's something wrong."
"No, it's only that, how am I meant to buy the item when everyone is clinging to me like a magnet?"
"You make a way, idiot."
"Whatever."
"With that out of the way, it's story night tonight."
"Please don't tell me Tarah is going to join us." I sighed.
I remember us having story nights, and it was basically humiliating Christmas stories or any story with humor in it. These were the kinds of stories that made my cheeks flush. My eyes widen as I realize Darius is going to hear about all of my embarrassing situations.
"Can't we do it another Christmas."
"No!" Athen said. "Your partner must be aware of all your humiliating situations." She grinned. My hand was lifted in a posture, as if I wanted to grasp her neck.
"Bring it in." Darius gestured for Athen to give her a high five, but before she could, I put it away. "You're no fun, Butterfly."
"Who would want to begin the story?" My father inquired.
Everyone was looking at each other. Everyone is reluctant to begin, and eventually my father will merely utter a name.
"Athen, you go first."
She groaned, "Why do I have to start first, I always start first." She complained.
"We get the dull ones out of the way first." I made a remark.
"At the very least, I didn't betray everyone." Athen retorted. I rolled my eyes and didn't respond. Darius and I both reach for our eggnog mugs. She grinned as she surreptitiously extracted a little bottle of alcohol from her hoodie pocket. I leaned my cup towards her and motioned with my chin for her to pour some in.
