Season 1 Episode 16

Aya POV

"In comparison to the malls in the large cities, this one is rather small." She spun around in circles. "And incredibly crowded." They all detour here since there were two towns sandwiching us that didn't have a mall.

"Yeah, everything gets packed over the holidays," I said with a smile. I filled my eyes with all the ornaments that hang above us, in each stores. My ears were overwhelmed with "rocking around the Christmas tree." I couldn't help but move my body in response to the music reverberating throughout the mall.

"So who was your secret Santa."

"Athen." I sighed, wishing I get mom. But my objective was to get something for everyone. So it didn't really matter. "Who's yours?"

"That little f**ker."

I came to a halt, lifting an eyebrow. "I mean, Tommy," she clarified. "However, he is scary."

"It's only a kid. They're intended to be spooky and tell you they have an imaginary buddy who turns out to be a demon from hell reeking havoc on the parents." I went into too much detail, which made her chuckle.

"Do you mean you were like that when you were younger?"

I shook my head swiftly. "It's always been just me and Jerry. From our early years as toddlers to our high school years, we never made it to college together, and perhaps I did betray him."

"I don't think so. What happened?"

"He was acting like an ordinary high school guy, skipping a few classes; I was the same as well; he became hooked to not doing his schoolwork. With my family's financial situation not going so well, I resolved to pull up my sock and strive to be the greatest."

"In that case, it's not your fault; he's a failure." I had an empty trolley at this point, having purchased as many gifts and food as I could.

"We were great friends; I could've been more involved in his life. I noticed him slipping and decided to leave him alone. I guess I was worried he wouldn't think I was cool again."

"He's somewhat correct, you're not cool." She teased.

"Whatever," I muttered.

"You are fantastic." As she said this, she pecked my cheeks.

"Are you going to buy any gifts now?" I inquired. Christmas was only a week and a few of days away. I can't believe the holidays are almost here, and before you know it, it's New Years, and all the Christmas joy will slowly left everybody, leaving them boring till the next Christmas. Every Christmas, I couldn't help but walk with a spring in my step and a huge smile on my face.

"Are you not buying any gifts?" I inquired again. But she didn't replied, and when I turned to my left, it was vacant. I started down the store aisles, but each one was clogged with customers, so locating her was difficult.

I'll probably have to wait for her outdoors.

Walking down the toy aisle, there she was staring at some teddy bears. I approached her, cautiously stroking her shoulder so as not to surprise her. "When I was kid, I always wanted a teddy bear. But I never got one. I even begged Santa for one. But he never gave it to me. I used to think I was a horrible kid. She muttered as she carefully laid it back down. Her eyes met mine for a split second, and there it was, that agony swirling in them. She forced a grin on her lips.

I didn't know what to say to her since I didn't want to aggravate her buried wounds by having her flee as she did the other day. Instead, I respected her space, assuming she'd discuss it when she was ready. Instead, I gently draw her into an embrace. Rather of pressuring something truly profound out of her, she needed a hug.

The queue for the present wrapping station was longer than the journey to the end of the earth. Worse, it wasn't moving, and when I tried to move out slightly to see how many workers were there, I couldn't since we weren't standing in a straight line, but rather a lap sided one.

Darius had gone to put the groceries in the vehicle, to reduce the weight, I hadn't really shown her about town yet, and by the time we were done here, it would be the blue hour of the day.

I moaned, since despite wearing comfortable winter boots, I could feel some minor discomfort traveling from my calf to my ankle. Now that I think about it, this was the result of not standing about all day. In the office, I was primarily sitting, waiting for Darius to serve her orders.

I sway my head and shift my shoulders, then balance like a flamingo bird on one leg.

I was attempting to relax my muscles, but it wasn't working since I was sandwiched between individuals in front and behind me. We were all ensnared, and I forced myself not to tell them to back up a bit.

"It's no surprise that most people despise Christmas." I sneered to myself. Even while Christmas made me joyful, I couldn't help but think about the downside, which was standing in long lines, hurrying for every thing that make the ideal gift, and also quietly waiting for someone to give you all the gifts you could ever want.

"Oh my god! Is that you, Aya?" Before I could react, someone crushed me in their arms. It was a male, given their strong grip and booming voice.

My eyes widened when I recognized Stephen, my ex-boyfriend. In any case, not even Jerry was aware that he was my covert ex-boyfriend. He was fed up with me and thought we should call it quits.

"Long time." He smiled, a gummy grin on his face. With his bright blue eyes peering down at me, I'd say he'd grown into his looks; he wasn't as gorgeous as I recalled. His hair was combed back on top, with the sides and back fading.

"Are you officially back in town?" he inquired.

"Nah, just visiting friends and family."

"Me, too," he says, his eyes widening. "I've just returned from Africa two days ago."

I rolled my eyes, apparently uninterested in hearing about his travels; all I wanted was to get these gifts wrapped and be on my way home.

"That's fantastic."

"May I take you out for a cup of coffee?"

No.

"Uhm—"

"Here you go." Darius replied as she handed me a cup of coffee. I extended my coffee cup to Stephen. "I already have someone bringing me coffee."

"Thank you, baby," I said as I leaned up to kiss Darius on the cheek. This is Stephen, my ex and Stephen this is my wife, Darius." I introduced in one breath.

Stephen's face plummeted, as did Darius', and I concealed my smile under the coffee lid.

"It's a pleasure to meet you." His voice became stern, and he hesitantly extended his hands for a handshake.

"I'm sorry, but I dislike touching people. But it was a pleasure to meet you." The monotony in her voice was visible "Are you going on your way now?" She inquired rudely. Her expression hardening. I bite my lower lip, enjoying this aspect of her a little too much.

"I'll see you later, Aya."

"You will not." As she sipped her coffee, one of her eyebrows lifted as if to say, 'challenge me if you dare,' and she pulled me into her chest, where I placed my head.

He seemed as though he was going to say something, but but he turned away instead.

I couldn't help but chuckle, but Darius snarled beside me, swiftly putting a stop to my laughter.

"What's so funny?"

"How possessive you are. It's sweltering."

"I'm not possessive."

"Yeah right." I whispered as I sipped my coffee.
