Season 1 Episode 8

Aya POV

Athen lifted an eyebrow, her gaze piercing Darius, who was leaning up against me on the couch. Our fingers interlocked mindlessly, and as much as I appreciated the sensation of her bigger hand covering mine, I didn't want to be near her. She was a cruel Grinch who needed to live in a cage far away from everyone, with a dog named Max.

Abiba enters the living room with zeal. A tree had yet to be erected just next to the ancient fire place, and I believed they were waiting for me so we could all decorate it as a family.

"So, this is what we have planned for the entire holiday season." Abida said it as loudly as she could. She cleared her throat as she took a piece of paper from the coffee table, which was filled of glasses of eggnog.

"We'll be baking cookies for the orphanage on Wednesday of next week." "We have..." she stated.

"What about decorating Christmas trees?" I was most looking forward to that activity because something about my family and myself gathering around the tree and putting it together was just so darn beautiful.

"That will be done tomorrow. Darius, since you're here, would you mind doing the honors of cutting and transporting the tree?"

"Sure." Her monotone voice murmured. I know she didn't want to do anything, but if she wants to stay, I'll simply have to push her.

"Tonight, folks, we're going to play our old card game. Where Athen is always victorious." Abida said, her eyes curling in annoyance. "Anyway, this year, three more guesses will fill in for mom and dad."

My brow wrinkled, mom and dad always participated, even if they weren't engrossed in the game, just being there was enough.

"Why not?"

"Perhaps if you were here—"

"They've gone to bed for the night." Abida slashes Athen. I couldn't help but grin.

"Who are the guest?"

Darius sneered beside me, and I elbowed her. "Fuck you." She muttered beneath her breath. I tried to unclasp our fingers, but she grasped them so tightly that I blurted in pain.

"Tarah, Darius and Jerry." She and Athen clapped as Jerry and Tarah entered. I scoffed, when Tarah and I eyee met. We were and will always be archenemies. She was my bully in high school, when I used to wore dorky glasses, she used to destroyed quite a few of them. I wasn't sure how she got into my house, but I want her gone now.

"Can I chat with you in the kitchen for a moment, Abi?"

"Drama." Beneath her breath, Athen sang, and I wanted to rip her teeth out.

"Why did you invite her?" As soon as we entered the kitchen, I asked Abida.

She let out a sigh.

"It's Christmas, come on. It's been years since you and her fought."

"Yeah, and those disagreements that we have yet are to be resolved. She was my tormentor."

"Just relax, nothing is going to happen, not with that hunk of a girlfriend sitting there."

I sighed and rolled my eyes. We returned to the living room. I collided into Darius, who sluggishly placed her arms around me. Jerry's gaze grabbed mine, but I avoided it with a little wave, which he weirdly responded. Probably not to create a terrible impression.

"I apologize for that, guys. My sister and I were catching up on some stuff. In any case, the game will now continue. Anyone who wins five rounds of the card game will receive a new Christmas mug."

I sighed and rolled my eyes. It was yet another ridiculous present.

"That's boring." Darius murmured, loud enough for everyone in the room to hear. I wasn't thrilled when she read my mind and said it aloud.

"So, big guy, what do you have in mind?" Athen scoffed and glared at her. Darius grinned. My eyes widened as she went into her pocket and put a wad of dollars on the coffee table.

"One thousand dollars in cash. There's more where it came from. Whoever wins a round will receive a thousand dollars."

"We're not interested in your blood money." Jerry took a stand.

"You don't have to play, little boy." Her steely gaze entrapped him, and his eyes widened.

"That sounds OK to me." All of us nodded, with the exception of Jerry and me, when Athen stated that. It was essentially gambling. This was no longer an enjoyable Christmas game.

"Was it necessary for you to bring your wicked tendencies here?" I muttered.

"Relax, butterfly, and enjoy yourself. You worry too much. And, c'mon, a fucking coffee mug."

She has a point regarding the coffee cup; the present was ridiculous, but I didn't intend for the game to become a gambling stop.

"I also feel as if I'm at a casino." She went on to say.

"Would anyone like to shuffle the cards?" Abida inquired. Darius lifted a hand, a grin crawling across her lips as she caught the deck of cards in her palm.

"All I need now is a tabacco hitch on the side of my lips and an exquisite glass of whiskey." She muttered. I was terrified she'd want to bring her heinous crime to this innocent community.

"You're going home after this game." I scowled.

She grinned.

"How about we place our own wager? If I win, I get to fuck you in various positions; if you win, I go home."

"Nice attempt, Sherlock."

She chuckled as she took the cards from the deck and began shuffling them.

"So we set a new rules for go fishing." Her grin widened as she winked at me, and I flushed and turned away.

"That's bull crap." Athen frowned.

"Then how do you think, the game will be fun honey."

"What are the guidelines?" For the first time, Tarah stated. Her voice sounded like chalk on a blackboard.

"Rule number one, there are no rules; we do whatever it takes to win, after all, a thousand bucks are on the line." She chuckled, as if she was negotiating with the devil. She gave each of us four playing cards.

"Let the game begin."

*********

We were in the third round of go fishing, and I still hadn't won. So far, Athen has won two grand and Abida has won one.

They appeared so thrilled winning money, and in all honesty, I was delighted Darius had brought Athen joy, even if it was with money, since at the very least she was happy.

Darius doesn't seem to mind that she has yet to win a round. But Jerry had a melancholy expression on his face. I've known for a long time that Jerry can't handle losing, so he avoids sports and games. He appeared to be planning to flip the coffee table if he didn't win a round.

Darius lowered her head and sipped from the bottle of vodka. I rolled my eyes, hoping she wouldn't stink by the end of the night.

I looked around as I noticed Tarah's gaze on me. I sneered and rolled my eyes at her, realizing she wasn't staring at me, but at Darius. It's no surprise that women desire after her, despite her horrible conduct; I was one of them on certain days, but she made me want to puke in a garbage can on others.

I dragged myself closer to her. My smile widened as she drew me closer and kissed me on the cheek.

"Go fishing!" Athen shouted Jerry tossed his card on the coffee table, a couple of which fell to the floor.

"I almost had it." Jerry gritted

"You appeared to be born lucky," Darius grinned.

"Tell that to, Aya." As she assembled the cards, Athen sneered.

"Athen." Abida warned. I groaned, knowing that Athen would never like of me.
