His little laughter filled the room as I held him over my shoulder. His tiny body squirming in my arms, causing me to hold him tighter to make sure he doesn't slip out of my grip. I heard Janissa call after us, telling me not to drop him, and that I should put him down. The young child straightened his back out, and tangled his tiny fingers into my hair, before I placed him back on the ground. I crouched down to his level placing my large hands on his shoulders as he continued laughing.
"What's your name soldier?" I whisper watching as the young child lifted his arm into a saluting position. His other arm hung straight down, and tight to his side.
"Jesse Andrews, sir." He shouted quietly with a stern face.
"At ease, Andrews." I laugh as I watch him drop his hand before running to go play with the rest of the children. Janissa sat on the counter-top, watching them as they ran around in circles screaming. She had nothing but pure adoration in her eyes for these children. I hop up, and take a seat next to her on the counter top folding my hands in my lap. She firmly held the coffee I had brought her in her hands, placing the cup to her lips taking a small sip. "You like working her, huh?" I ask, already knowing the answer. They was she looked at the kids, how she handles them.
"I wouldn't trade it for the world." She whispered, her golden eyes meeting my own. I sent her a warm smile before my own gaze was brought back to the small child I befriended only moments before. He was in the corner drawing on a single piece of paper. I noticed Janissa's gaze was on him intently as well. "Go talk to him, Haz. He's always by himself. He seemed... Open, when you came." My eyes never left the small child. I gave her a nod, hopping off the counter, and made my way over to the small child.
"Whatcha drawing there?" I asked. He instantly looked up at me with a warm smile. His little laugh filled the air as kicked his little feet onto the floor. My positioned myself against the wall, later sliding down to be seated next to him.
"You and Miss Janissa." He whispered.
"And what's that?" Pointing to a small clump of mixed colors on the page. His face pulled into a bright, adorable smile.
"You're holding her hand, silly..." His small laughter filling the air as he continued to color my chocolate curls. "There's a story that goes with it,"
"Oh really? Wanna tell me it?" I ask, bringing my knee to my chest and staring intently at the small child.
"Well, you like miss Janissa, but you don't want her to know. So you keep it a secret, but one day she finds out, then she likes you back, and you live happily ever after." I let out a small laugh before watching Jess jump up and down on the floor. "Ooh, ooh, ooh, and then, you and miss Janissa have a family! And by a doggie!" He quickly pulls out a yellow crayon, and begins to draw a small child.
"Who's that?" I ask quietly, quickly glancing over at Janissa catching her eye for a brief second. She sent me a smile, before I turn my gaze back to Jess.
"That's me, sir." He laughed as if it were the most obvious thing in the world.
"You don't have to call me sir, Jess. You can call me Harry, or Haz, as miss Janissa calls me."
"Hazza!" He laughs jumping up and down.
"That works too." I laugh, as Jess hands me his drawing. I thanks him, and send him a warm smile, before walking over to Janissa and hand her the drawing. When she asked me what it was, I told her that Jess had drew it for her, well, us.
