First and second period seem to soar by as if time was rushing me to lunch. Rushing me to spill everyone of my darkest secrets to someone I haven't even known that long. Though I felt like I can trust her.
Since Niki was in my second period I didn't have to worry about meeting up with her anywhere. The shrieking of the bell brought me out of my thoughts and I stood up. Niki stood patiently by my desk, waiting for me to gather my things. I was dreading this.
Once I had my things she latched onto my hand, careful about my arm, and pulled me along with her. She led me down the hall and out one of the many exits of our school.
It was still early in the day but the sun was beating down and the temperature was beginning to climb. We walked over to a big tree that was on the edge of the back football field.
I slid my bag off of my shoulder and sat with my back against the trunk of the tree, Niki followed my actions. For a moment nothing was said. Everything was so quiet and the only thing heard was the summer breeze that rustled the leaves of the trees.
"You know you can trust me Ryder. I know that we haven't been friends for long but I want you to know that you can."
I sighed. It's not that I didn't trust her, it's just that I have only told Aspen everything that's been going on. I mean my own mother doesn't even know anything.
"I know that I can, it's just hard. I don't know where to start."
"How about I ask you questions and you answer them honestly?"
"Sure, why not?"
She nodded and seemed to think about what her first question would be. I was nervous but I was going to answer honestly.
"OK, we'll start off easy. Who was that girl and why is she out to get you?"
"Her name is Anna. She is the Queen Bitch of the school and is my main bully, as you could probably tell. As for why, I really don't know. I haven't done anything to her and we even used to have the same friends when we were younger."
She nodded and paused to think of her next question.
"Why haven't you told someone or stand up for yourself?"
"Who would I tell? The principal is her uncle and adores her. No one will say they've seen anything, they're not about to jump on the sinking ship that I am on. I have no proof of what she did at the mall and everyone won't believe it since I used to cut myself. Aspen already knows but I won't let him do anything and my mom doesn't need that kind of stress."
"Why won't you let Aspen help? Or tell your mom?"
I sighed, so many questions.
"There's only like a month and a couple weeks left of school. What's the point in doing anything about it now? I won't tell my mom because she has already gone through so much. My dad was an alcoholic and he would beat us. He took it too far and tried to kill her. He's in jail now but she doesn't need this to stress over."
"Omg! Ryder that's awful! But you still shouldn't have to deal with this. Why do you go along with whatever she wants?"
"She doesn't want me to sing the solo in the talent show thing that's coming up. She told me to back out, and I've tried to. Mr. Jay won't take no for an answer. It's not like she wants the solo or anything she just wants to take everything from me. She's threatening to tell the whole school and the authorities about Aspen and I."
She looked confused, but continued to ask questions.
"Why, what's wrong with you and Aspen?"
"He's almost 20 and I'm still only 17. I mean it shouldn't matter since we haven't slept together or anything but I don't want to chance it. I don't turn 18 until the day we graduate, June 26."
She was quiet for a few moments after that. Probably processing all of the information I just hurled at her. It was a lot to take in. I just hope she still wants to be my friend even with all of the drama and shit that comes along with me. She seemed to snap out of her thoughts and turned to me.
"I want to help you Ryder. If you are planning on simply just waiting it out then I will be there for you. You also have to do the solo. I can tell that you want to do it but your afraid of losing Aspen. Just do it. I have heard you in vocals class and you are amazing, don't let her ryin everything for you. You deserve this and I am going to help you get it."
I was shocked. No one (besides Aspen) has ever been willing to help me or be my friend. I'm not one to cry but I started to tear up as I pulled her in for a hug. Niki was awesome and I'm so glad she became my friend. I pulled away as the bell rang, signaling that lunch was over. We made no move to get up and just sat there in the warm breeze and listened to the leaves.
I closed my eyes and breathed in. At this moment I was happy. I turned to Niki, smiled and said the only thing I could think of to sum up everything.
"Thank you."
