Growing up everyone had a best friend that they would do everything with, share every secret with. I was no exception.
I met my childhood best friend when I was 10 years old. It was the first day of the 5th grade and I hated it, surprise surprise! All of the other boys and girls had already found seats with their friends before I even made it into the classroom. As usual I sat alone, and in the back.
The class had barely begun when a series of feverish knocks were heard on the door. My teacher, Mrs.Dawson, opened the door and a girl with dark brown hair rushed past her. I didn't bother listening to their conversation until I heard words I'd never heard in school before.
"Well Ms. Miller you can take a seat by Ryder at the back."
The girl quickly nodded and made her way to the seat next to me, the only empty seat. I kept my head down and stayed silent as I usually did during the whole class until it was recess.
Recess was what every kid in elementary school looks forward to, even me. I hated being stuck in a room where the only person who talked to me was the teacher. As soon as the bell rang we all jumped up and made a mad dash for the door.
Once I was outside, I went and sat under a tree that was far enough away from the other children. When I was comfortable I pulled out my crappy first generation iPod touch and put on Smells Like Teen Spirit.
I closed my eyes and let the music fill my ears, the next 15 minutes were my only peace during the day. That peace didn't last long as I felt my headphones being jetked from my ears. When I looked up I saw that the girl who sat next to me had put them into her ears and was listening carefully. Suddenly she smiled at me and sat down while handing me one of my headphones back.
"Nirvana, nice choice! My name's Cyan Miller, what's yours?"
"Ryder Reed."
After that Cyan and I were like every other pair of best friends, inseparable. As we got older both of our families turned to shit. We still told each other every thing though. I told her about my dad and she told me about her parents.
Cyan's parents were bad people. Her mother was a big time drug user while her dad was part of a really dangerous gang. Half of the time her mom was too high to look after her and her dad was barely ever home, we can only imagine the types of horrible things he did. Cyan had to grow up fast and it wasn't fair.
By the time we were 13 things only got worse. On top of everything I was already dealing with, my only and best friend was being taken from me. Her parents had been caught by the police and had been arrested. Since Cyan had no other family to take her she was being sent to foster care.
The next day was the last day I ever saw or heard from Cyan. We stood in front of each other and just stared, trying to memorize the face of our best friend. Who knew when or if we would ever see each other again. At last we hugged like our lives depended on it.
When we pulled away she handed me a piece of paper with a phone number on it. I was confused since I already knew her number and this wasn't it.
"I don't want this to be goodbye Ryder. If you are ever in trouble, no matter what you can reach me on this number. You're my best friend and I'll be there for you any way that I can. If there's ever an emergency, call me."
"I will."
After that she was ushered into a black car and was gone. I never saw her again.
Shaking out of my thoughts I made it home and ran up to my room. Pulling out a box from under my bed, I shifted stuff around until I came across the paper with Cyan's number printed neatly. Picking up my phone, I dialed and waited.
"Hello?"
"Cyan, I need your help."
