September 1st, 2009
The rest of the summer flew by quickly, and before they knew it, the first of September had arrived. With it came the excitement of another school year for many young witches and wizards. Teddy Lupin was no exception.Teddy, who had never been a morning person, was up early that morning. The only people who were up before him were Ginny, who had been up at the crack of dawn almost every morning, puking her guts out, and Harry, who had been woken up by her retching.
Teddy came bounding down the stairs just after 6:00, his turquoise-colored hair only slightly less messy than his godfather's. He skidded to a stop just outside the kitchen, where he crashed into the same umbrella stand his mother was known for tripping over and fell flat on his face.
"Easy there, Ted." Harry grinned. "We can't have you injuring yourself on your exciting day." He reached out a hand and helped the young boy up.
"Oops." Teddy mumbled, his cheeks red with embarrassment. "I guess I wasn't looking where I was going."
Harry chuckled. "I can't say I blame you. I was pretty excited on my first day, too. Still, I didn't expect you to be up this early." He opened the door to the kitchen and motioned for Teddy to enter before making his way to the cupboards. He pulled out a carton of eggs from the cupboard, which had a cooling charm on it, while Teddy pulled out a mixing bowl.
"Can I crack the eggs?" He asked.
Teddy loved to help cook. At first, Harry had been hesitant to let him help due to his own experience with cooking as a child, but he soon learned that Teddy really enjoyed it. Harry never forced the boy to cook, unlike his own aunt and uncle, who made him do all the cooking, but he allowed him to help with the more simple things. Teddy wasn't allowed near the stove unless an adult was around, and even then, Harry normally had him stick to mixing and stirring rather than using the oven or stove, but Harry had come to accept and even appreciate the help from his godson.
"Have at it." Harry said, handing the eggs to Teddy. He watched as Teddy carefully cracked each egg before allowing the egg yolk to drip into the bowl. Harry then took the bowl and poured the contents into the pan on the stove, while Teddy went to get the ingredients for the pancakes.
"You know," Harry said, a mischievous glint in his eyes. "You have a bit of flour on your face."
"What? Where?"
"Right there." Harry said, taking a bit of flour and dabbing it on his unsuspecting Godson's nose.
"Hey!" Teddy yelped. He took a slightly larger amount of flour and flicked it at Harry, who then took some of his own and sprinkled it on Teddy's head. Before long, the two were in a full-on flour fight. When the kitchen door opened and other members of the family began to pile in, both Harry and Teddy were covered from head to toe in flour.
"What's going on in here?"
Harry and Teddy both spun around to find Remus and Tonks standing there with amused smiles on their faces.
"Harry started it!" Teddy exclaimed.
In response, Harry took his wand and, using a simple spell, made the flour in the bowl fly out and hit Teddy in the face.
"Hey!"
"Sorry, I missed a spot." Harry grinned.
Teddy took an egg and, standing up on a stool, cracked it over Harry's head. Egg yolk dripped down the front of Harry's face.
"Unbelievable." Remus mumbled, but his lips twitched upward into a smile.
The door opened again, and Sirius entered with James, Grace, and Al. James took one look at the giant mess, and his eyes lit up. "FOOD FIGHT!" He shouted before running over and jumping on his father's back while Al wrapped himself around Harry's legs.
