Backstory: Born in the US' Last Frontier, he spent much of his childhood hunting elks and grizzlies in the Alaskan wilderness with his father and he became the youngest Wimbledon Cup winner in the history of marksmanship competition in 2001.

By the time he was 21 years of age, he joined the USMC, first as a regular Marine infantryman and later as a Force Recon Marine to protect his home country from terrorists. He first served in Afghanistan and then was quickly transferred to Iraq to participate in Operation Iraqi Freedom. Due to his exemplary term of service with the Marines, he was then transferred to the CIA SAD, where he met his brother-in-arms Frank Woods and his former handler Jason Hudson. Both Mason and Woods would develop a strong mistrust towards Hudson due to his "Ice Cube" personality. Woods was also responsible for keeping Mason's impulsiveness in check

At some point during his time in the CIA SAD, he met a retired Spetsnaz commander Viktor Reznov, whom he saw as a mentor of his, and later the CIA's new recruit and Hero Cop of Chicago, Ian Prince. And just like Mason and Woods, he and Prince quickly became friends and brother-in-arms, while Ian also becomes Mason's second mentor. Mason even made Ian a godfather to David Mason as a form of gratitude.

At some point in the world of Remnant, Mason told Ian of his fear of his son David living without the love of a mother. Thus, Ian decided to do matchmaking and paired up Mason with the leader of the Happy Huntresses, Robyn Hill. Soon, the two hit it off, went on a few dates before finally becoming a couple.
