Backstory: Born to a retired Honolulu Police Department sergeant and a former CIA agent, Steve McGarrett is a third-generation Navy veteran and was named after his great grandfather, Ensign Steven McGarrett, who was onboard the battleship, USS Arizona, during the attacks on Pearl Harbor. Honoring his great grandfather and his family tradition, he joined United States Naval Academy and graduated with flying colors. His military career is largely unknown or vague due to its highly classified nature. During a mission in South Korea escorting wanted arms dealer Anton Hesse, he received a call from his dad, John, who told that he was held hostage by Anton's brother Victor. The convoy Steve was on was then attacked by a hostile helicopter, inadvertently killing Anton and leading Victor to murder John. Returning to Hawaii to bury his dad, he is asked by the Governor to form a task force with "full immunity and means" to investigate and capture criminals. Steve reluctantly agreed and transferred to the United States Navy Reserve, then he recruited Danny Williams, Chin Ho Kelly and Kono Kalakaua, and formed the Five-0 task force. Steve first met Ian Prince after he saved his old friend's daughter from a hacker linked to the Ten Rings and they quickly hit it off due to their similar skillsets and goals. Over time, Ian became the Five-0's official partner and intelligence officer and his help greatly contributed Five-0's success. After stepping down as the commander of the task force and leaving Hawaii with his girlfriend Catherine Rollins, he was approached by Kate Laswell, who told him that Ian was forming his own task force called Disciples and asked him if he and his old team were interested in becoming a strike team for the task force.
