Backstory: Born a Navy brat due to her father, not much is known about Catherine due to the classified nature of the US military intelligence division, but what is known about her is that she is a well-trained and highly-decorated US Navy Intelligence Officer. During her time in the Navy, she met and had a relationship with Steve McGarrett, but decided to keep it a secret due to strict fraternization rules in the military and the fact that McGarrett outranked her. Still, they had been working together since, especially in Afghanistan, where they searched for a local boy, whose father saved her. However, Steve was sent back to Oahu with nothing more than a severe reprimand, and she thought she was alone in her mission, but she was wrong. When Ian heard of the news, he sent Frank Woods and Alex Mason to Afghanistan to help Catherine and then Adler made contact with her and told her from Ian, who would not be named in the call: "You will never have to work alone." Ian also told the CIA to not recruit her and let her stay in Oahu, so that she could get married with Steve. She will have a strong friendship with Ian as Ian gives her a new purpose when he recruits her along with Five-0 into Task Force Disciples.

As for her relationship with Ian Prince, they met each other after Ian rescued Lou's daughter from the hacker Ian Wright. Since they were both military, they quickly formed a strong brother and sister-in-arms relationship, as well as Ian being both a mentor and a big brother figure to her.
