Backstory: A conspiracy theorist with a heart of gold, Jerry Ortega has a passion for searching for the truth to numerous conspiracies and mysteries. And his skill was put to the test when he reunited with Chin Ho Kelly and met the Five-0 Task Force during an investigation of a murder relating to a disbanded secret society in Hawaii named the Royal League. Since then, Jerry assisted them in numerous cases, such as the Black Unicorn stealth satellite case and the high school reunion murder case, not realizing that in the latter case, he was unknowingly assisted by Ian Prince from Chicago. He then took up the position of Special Consultant and Technical Operator for the Five-0, until a near-death experience made him rethink his life and he decided to leave the Five-0 and finish his book. Jerry first met Ian when he was with Junior to transport Junior's late comrade, confessing how Jerry was rejected from military service, and later met Ian again during their first visit to the Phoenix Foundation, a privately-funded US intelligence agency under the guise of a think tank.
Though slightly weirded out by Jerry's conspiracy theorist tendency, Ian and Jerry quickly bonded during their time cooperating with the Phoenix Foundation in uncovering an ancient eco-terrorist organization and a scientific R&D conglomerate named CODEX. Seeing the potential in his skills, Ian recruited Jerry into his Task Force 'The Disciples' as his consultant and technical operator. There, he got the chance to reunite with his Five-0 friends and he was trained in marksmanship as well in order for him to protect himself.
