Lunch Hours

Here we are now, crammed on a table next to the window. We were laughing our asses off, and I forgot why. That happens, forgetting what we were laughing about always happens. Mark had his head lolled backwards while doing his satanic laugh from ‘don’t stop’, Sean and Isom were leaning on each other in silent laughter, I was leaning forward with my hands on my face collecting oxygen, and Cubbie had his good hand on his forehead while shaking his head because he got sick and tired of us, but he still managed to let out a few chuckles. I stopped, short of breath. The invisible chain around my chest tightened, “I forgot what we were laughing about.” I said, covering the shortness of my breath.

“I don’t know, but I blame it on Mark.” Sean accused,

“Yea, Mark.” Isom nodded,

“Mark it is.” Cubbie agreed,

“Blame the funny guy.” Mark scoffed. Isom kept glancing at me, and it annoys the shit out of me. He has changed after I told him, he has officially become paranoid after I said that I could have an asthma attack any moment. That is the reason why I refuse to tell anyone. I tried to get my minds off things by looking around as if I was in a museum. The world is a museum, there is just things to see. A restaurant was across ours and I saw someone familiar in there. I used all my focus to figure out that ridiculously familiar guy. I gasped,

“I see Pontius!” I exclaimed,

“What? Where?” Mark sounded excited. I pointed at the guy right across from us. He was facing us but slightly tilted to the side. Sean started to wave like a toddler,

“Pontius, you’re missing all the fun!” He said as if Pontius could hear him,

“He’s ignoring us.” Isom frowned,

“Of course he is.” I rolled my eyes, “You know who he’s with.”

“Natalie McFriendofPontius.” Sean gritted,

“That’s actually a good one.” We did a distant high five.

“I’m sorry, buddy.” Mark said and raised his middle finger, “But fuck you.” He wiggled his middle finger, and then we burst out laughing.

“Mark, you’re going to start a riot!” I pulled his hand down before anyone thinks that it was meant for him or her. I looked at Pontius and I was sure that he saw it. He seemed to be utterly astonished and I could see the anger in his blurry face. Sean had his face glued to the window while laughing. It will not surprise me when a waiter comes and says that Sean is contaminating their newly washed windows. I carefully watched every move of Pontius, in a non-creepy way, obviously. I could tell he was not listening to Natalie blab about herself, but he was lost in her eyes instead. I got to see her eyes once, and they were frankly appealing. Mark Pontius is deeply in love, people.

“Everybody look away! She’s turning!” Easy for Sean, Isom, and Cubbie to do it because their backs were against the window. Mark and I were totally exposed to the outside and they just got their windows washed. The first thing I did was to grab the menu and hold it up to my face. Mark got a hold of the bottom corner of the menu and pulled it closer to him. Our cheeks were almost touching and I could feel goose bumps on the back of my neck. We had a blank gaze for a second and it was completely awkward,

“So why do you think she’s decided to come back to him?” He started,

“Do you want the truth or a crappy lie?”

“Start with the truth.”

“Mark Pontius, drummer of Foster The People, everybody loves him-”

“Not really.”

“Suit your self.” I rolled my eyes and continued, “The high life, great income.”
