Author's Note: One, I apologise for the lack of update, life and school had been hectic and two, I have changed the final battle sequence for the end of season one (where Mando gets hurt) and so this chapter isn't very accurate to the episode but it still follows the main plot. I've done this on purpose, not out of laziness, as I've decided to take it a different way slightly (although not extremely different) so don't kill me. Enjoy.
I missed. In all my years of shooting assholes, I had never missed and yet I did. I hadn't noticed him approaching, I was too focused on Gideon's words, on his mannerisms and his smug smile to notice my old Master coming towards me.
He had adverted the blaster shot, letting it hit one of the stormtroopers before using the Force to keep my in place. I fought against him, but Maul's strength had always been better than mine. The monster approached slowly, hand raised.
"You know," he began, "I always thought you cleverer than this Kenobi."
I couldn't even move my head to meet his gaze, and I knew that Maul was aware of how much it made my blood boil. I only hoped that no one would try to save me from this, they would only end up dead. I wasn't a religious person, but I prayed Mando stayed hidden.
He ran the hand that wasn't raised across my cheek, bending his head so that we were eye level. "There was a time where it was a challenge to keep you in one place. A challenge." – his lips curled into a snarl – "Now all you are is a disappointment. A failed Apprentice."
I struggled against his hold, words coming out strained as he applied more pressure to my neck. "I'm... going to... kill you."
Maul smiled. "With what strength?"
"Let her go," he spoke from behind me and if I could, I would have closed my eyes in frustration.
"Mando..." I tried, but the pressure increased as Maul's hand tightened to cut me off. He released the hold he had for a moment, but only lifted me into the air, choking me just enough that I could still breath, but that it hurt. I could see him now, the armoured man standing in the ruins of the Catina. He stood alone and I knew that his gaze was on me.
"What will you give me for her Mandalorian?" Maul asked. "For your Duchess?"
"She is not my Duchess," Din told him.
"Then what is she to you?" he furthered the question. "I could crush her neck right now and then yours and then the neck of every traitor hiding behind you and I wouldn't even break a sweat."
"Run..." I managed.
Maul only laughed. "You should do as she says. You have a Cohort that will miss the coin you bring in. No one will miss her."
"You're wrong about that," Miggs added, stepping over the rubble to stand at Mando's side. He held a large gun in his hands, where he had gotten it, I had no idea.
"Miggs Mayfield," Gideon commented, approaching Maul's side. "You were a stormtrooper. How far you have fallen."
He scoffed. "If it wasn't for Kar, I would be dead or still serving in you backwater shitshow of an Empire," he told the man. "And so I suggest you let her down or," – he rose his gun, pressing a button on the side to power it up – "I'll rip a hole right through your army."
"You'll die!" Maul shouted, hand tightening and I gasped, reaching for the invisible rope around my neck.
Mayfield faltered and I could clearly see the worry in his face. Mando stood still, helmet fixed on Darth Maul. Miggs looked at the Mandalorian, but it was impossible to know what he was thinking.
