It's January 7 but I felt like writing this one :>
"Happy new year, Fuwawa!"
"Happy near year, Mococo!"
"Together we are!"
"FUWAMOCO! HAPPY NEW YEAR!" The twins were pulling at each other's faces as they sat on their chairs in the table. Their laughs and giggles filling the dining area. This kind of noise wasn't something I'd get tired of.
"Happy new year everyone!" Bijou cheered, glugging her strawberry milk on a carton afterward. She turned to me smoothly, her cheeks stuffed like that of a chipmunk's, the contents of said milk were spewing out of her mouth with each word she released. "Haffy new hir chu yu, Cwill!"
"It's not the new year yet but I appreciate it, Bijou." I offered her a smile.
It was 6:34 pm. New Years wouldn't be here yet until midnight struck.
"Why do we have to celebrate a new year? It's just another year close to your life shortening. I don't love the idea of my withering when the time comes." Truthfully, I've had the same idea before. There wasn't anything worth celebrating when you count the things you did last year. But accomplishments weren't all there was to life. Events like these were auspicious, causing excitement and positive amalgamation. Nerissa, as always, was the one to bring up these questions whenever we ate food at the table. Nonetheless, I never disliked the opinions of the girls. It added more variety to the table and made the food taste better, if that made sense.
"You've been under Crill's guidance and you still can't understand the value of things humans hold dear? Tsk, tsk, tsk." Shiori wagged her finger, to which Nerissa grabbed hold of said finger and twisted it with a vehement crack that made my stomach churn in levels that couldn't enter before.
"Nerissa! Refrain from violence when we're eating in the table! Geez..." Sarah raised her spoon up at her, the bowl in her other hand. "Is your finger okay, Shiori?!"
Shiori laughed, waving it around, the flesh around it grew purple and lifeless. "I can heal this back, no biggie. There has to be text around somewhere in my bookmarks containing the answer."
"No, but really, you must be in pain... Are you pretending to smile through it?"
"On the contrary, I'm quite masochistic, thank you for asking, Sarah. Seeing Nerissa fuming at how I rile her up fills me with a fiery passion and-"
"Keep talking and you won't have enough fingers to summon your precious bookmarks," Nerissa folded her arms as she settled on her chair. She turned her sights to me, her look never faltering. "Why is a new year special for you, Crill?"
"For me? Erm... I think a new year for most people just means a fresh start for them to improve at the things they're doing. Many cultures around the world have celebrations to bid farewell to the past year and welcome the new one with hope and resolutions through festivities. While a new year may be negative for others, it's usually related to setting new goals for the future."
"Are you suggesting that people tend to wait for the new year to improve themselves rather than doing it throughout the current year?"
"Some think like that, but a new year is associated with a positive connotation. All kinds of people have different dreams and whether they want to pursue it now or the next year is up to them. It just means you're blessed to have another chance to live the life given to you."
"Hm... You make more sense than Shiori."
"I was about to explain it so nicely to you before you oh-so rudely and deliciously snapped my finger in half," Shiori hugged her finger with her other hand, re-adjusting it and making those twisted bone sounds that made my whole body shiver. When she released her other fingers from it, the finger looked good as new, as if it wasn't completely obliterated just a few seconds ago. "Do you want to celebrate the new year or do you want to break my toes too?"
