Keefe's gaze shifted to the bottom of Sophie's cape, which was now soaked from the water of the river.

His gaze met hers and she blushed that adorable way she always did when he studied her.

God, he loved her.

He moved closer to her and reached to unclasp her cape. "May I?" he asked, eyes locked firmly with hers. She nodded, her eyes following his hands as he unclasped her cape.

He lingered a second when he'd unfastened it. The air between them became charged with something new and pleasant. He finally pulled the cape off her shoulders.

"Here," he said, draping the soaked fabric over his shoulder so he could unclasp his cape and drape it over her shoulders. He clasped it beneath her chin.

"Keefe... You don't—"

"The alternative is carrying you," he interrupted, smirking. "Or sharing my cape. I'm assuming you'd prefer neither of those. Right?"

Her eyes glinted with something that may have been flirty as she said, "I'm not opposed to either, actually." the glint vanished when she added. "But this is fine too." She smiled a small smile, and he couldn't resist.

He leaned down and kissed her, letting his hand get tangled in her hair.
