Douma was quite curious to see how this year's Hunger Games was going to go.
The cameras were going to be live on drones and nothing gets a crowd going then the action happening in real time. A true spectacle for the city for the games that they've become invested in. It has become dull to see it so static. The intensity of the games is thrilling. The blood pumping in the veins of the tributes, mentors, and spectators.
He was done being a witness this time around. He wants to be a game-maker assistant.
But sadly, his senior, Muzan has gotten the role this year. To whisper in the ear of the one that sets the stage the props that can be there.
Now they only need their actors to put on a show.
Sometimes Douma wonders how it would be to fight for his life, would it finally make him feel something other than the physical motives of his mind?
—
Kotoha from the poor district of 12 was nothing in comparison to the other tributes.
Save for the fact she had talent she underutilized.
Though he didn't know that, simply introduced himself, telling her how he was going to mentor her for this year's Hunger Games.
She was a dirty and scared little thing in their first encounter. Right off the train and thrown into the cage to be terrified of their new surroundings.
She had tensed up when he wasn't getting anything from her, coming to kneel and wipe her face of grim with his handkerchief. At one point, he used his thumb to wipe stubborn dirt.
He hums, finally getting a proper look at her.
"A beautiful girl I have to watch for in this year's Hunger Games." She wasn't in the best shape, her eye was swollen and a cut was above her brow. She was surely going to be at a disadvantage because as he would later learn, she had gone partially blind in that eye.Oh, how adorable her features were when she was flustered.
—He had come by her room. He had wanted to share some interesting observations of other tributes when he came to a slow stop. Something was echoing off the walls. A voice, a heavenly, sickly sweet, angelic voice that should be part of a choir or opera.
Where it was coming from soon became obvious.
It came from Kotoha.
It had come from a songbird that people would donate good money to in order to see her last longer.
—
"Kotoha-chan, I know you aren't physically ready and with the time we have, you won't be." Kotoha nods, meek as Douma bites into his delicious apple. "But interviews are a great way to get donations.""How? I can barely talk to one person, how could I talk with a crowd of people-?" Douma takes her chin at the tip of his fingers, taking another bite into his apple before swallowing.
"Kotoha-chan, you only need to sing. You sing beautifully. Enchanting. Though we need to get you some makeup. I can't have you not looking your best."
—
She was like a blossoming flower when she finally began singing, the donations coming in and he almost believed she could win.—
When the games were set to begin he came to her with another handkerchief and wiped the tears from her face as she was to be sent out."Any last request Kotoha-chan? Should I not see you breathing after this." She choked back the tears she had, hugging him at the peak of her anxiety and fear for the games.
"Please, take me back home."
He kisses her brow, a smile against her skin.
"Hai, I will Kotoha-chan. Now go out with a bow."
—
Muzan was a bit cruel to send out dogs on the first night.
Though they fell asleep, one even came to nudge against Kotoha's leg as they dreamed about a tasty bone.
She hadn't killed a single soul.
Not till one tried grabbing her from the tree she had taken a rest in. She had kicked and...
Hmm, how odd how his veins felt tight as she tried not to cry out, alerting the other tributes.
When she kicked the tribute in his face, Douma couldn't help but grin at the action.
It was quite a sight seeing her expression at her first kill when the tribute snapped his neck on impact.
—
By all means, she shouldn't have survived. Not a chance.
He was fully expecting to prepare her body for her return home.
But the moment she came back, shell-shocked and not registering anything, he had come to her, something in him making him pick up the pace as he came to hug her with all his might. His cheeks were hurting at how they held his smile.
"Kotoha-chan you did it! You've become a victor!"
—
She would go to each district, giving a few words to the masses. Douma was there, thinking it was wonderful how she stood her ground even as she was being glared at.She would sit with him, silent as they rode the train to the next district.
—
She had choked when he easily ordered peacekeepers on one young man.He had been waiting to see who had caused her bruise and blindness that had almost gotten her killed in the games.
An ex-boyfriend she would explain to him.
How undeserving he was.
—
She was a hit in the Capitol. Invited multiple times to it over the course of the next few months till finally, Douma had made the suggestion that she simply come to stay in the capitol. She would, and she was closer than ever.
He just couldn't help himself.
—
"Kotoha-chan, the games are about to begin again. What would you like to do?" He had wanted to do a watch party, the excitement for the games was on the rise and he wanted to feel that.Kotoha was uneasy.
"Please, Douma, I rather not." Douma tilted his head, the wine bottle almost slipping from his grip with how unsettled Kotoha looked.
She had won. Why wouldn't she want to relive the moment?
So he offers something else. A quiet night with wine.
—
When the cannon fired, signaling the start of the games, Kotoha lay curled in her bed, Douma hugging her from behind. Both slept off the wine that made them forget the excitement and troubles that these damn games bring.
—
Two years later-
"Have you heard? Victor of the tenth Hunger Games, songbird as many know her as Kotoha has gotten married to her former mentor!"
"Oh, how juicy! Sounds straight out of a fairy tale."
"People have heard that they are already expecting a child!"
"Oh my. Let's hope they bring new ideas to our great capital!"
