Saturday introduced itself finally as I managed to get most of my homework done before the evening. I planned to make dinner for my dad and I. It's been a long time since we've had a family dinner. Ever since my mom has been missing we haven't done any bonding like we should have. My mom would lose her mind if she knew I'd been spending most of my days alone while my dad was off doing who knows what. Tonight should be different as I made our favorite pasta dish. Even pulled out his favorite Merlot wine to compliment it. There was nothing that could go wrong!
Setting up the table and his wine, the food smelled like heaven. I knew he would walk through that door any minute and I couldn't wait for him to taste what I made. It wouldn't be anything like my mom's but it was close enough. Family meant everything to me and this was a moment we couldn't let pass. I'm sure he wouldn't mind making time for this one little thing. He was my father after all. His schedule was whenever he wanted.
After minutes of waiting, the door finally opened and my dad walked through. I was excited to see him until I realized he wasn't here to stay. The way he was rushing in and left the front door wide open told me this was a quick stop. With a little convincing maybe I'll get him to stay. Even if it's to try a bite of food. I know he was busy but making time for his daughter shouldn't have been a problem. But it was.
Smiling nervously, I greeted my father. "Dad, h-how are you?" I stuttered.
He kissed the top of my head, rushing to head to his office. "Busy as always sweetie," he said not sparing me another glance.
I followed behind him hoping he'd listen to me. "I was thinking we could have dinner together tonight," I smiled. "There's pasta and your favorite Merlot on the table."
My dad grabbed papers off his desk before looking at me somberly. "I wish I could sweetie, but I have to meet with a client in a few minutes." He declined.
The disappointment was hard to hide but I did anyway. "Oh... okay maybe you can come a little later?" I asked him.
We haven't spent much time with each other over the past few months. This was our chance to get reconnected after weeks of not being acquainted. His job meant a lot to him and I know it was some illegal things he was involved in but he could make room for his daughter. It was a simple dinner and the fact that he was turning me down stung a bit. It put more emphasis on finding my mom. At least she was able to make time for me.
The suggestion for him to come later did no good either as he turned that idea down as well. Who knew it would be so hard to get your parent's attention? Was he so busy that he couldn't even have dinner with me? I'm sure he could reschedule but of course, he wouldn't do that.
"I promise to make it up to you sweetie," he said sprinting to the door. "Oh, why don't you ask Ace if he'll have dinner with you for the time being."
That would be his bright idea. Ace and I had nothing to talk about. We didn't have much in common and I barely knew the guy. What were we going to talk about? His lesson plans for the rest of the school year? I didn't spend an hour setting everything up to have dinner with my bodyguard. He had his lane and I had mine. We didn't need to get any closer than we already were.
My dad closed the door and I sighed with sadness. My heart yearned for an ounce of his time like everyone else seemed to get. Especially now with Mom gone. It was hard dealing with all of this alone. There wasn't anyone I could turn to who would understand how I was feeling. Everyone else's lives were perfect. I'm stuck in a big empty house with nothing but my emotions to keep me company. And a super hot bodyguard.
