Chapter Nine

The scene was horrid. Blood everywhere I walked. I tried to holler for someone to help, but of course no answer. What where they even doing? I cleaned myself up after a few minutes of holding pressure to my arm to make sure I had stopped bleeding. The cut wasn't that bad, but it had bled profusely, marking my entire trail to the bathroom and somehow managing to splatter onto walls as I turned corners as well. The newly white towel with which I had wrapped it was now soaked red. After bandaging myself up I made my way back to the kitchen to clean up the mess. I gathered up the broken pieces of glass and wiped up the left over coffee. I was so pissed that I didn't pay proper attention to what I was doing and wound up breaking yet another of my favorite mushroom cups by knocking it off the counter. This had been the third one this year. Maybe they're just that easy to break or maybe it's my temper. Who knows. But why did it always have to be my best mugs?

Knock Knock. Someone tapped the wall just inside the kitchen to announce their presence. It was, out of all, people, Jake.

"Ouch, that looks nasty. What did you do, stab someone?"

"No," I scoffed, "a coffee mug broke."

Although I had debated on telling him about Linda and Sasha, I kept my mouth shut. As much as I'd like to expose that bitch after her audacity to treat me as the bad guy, I wasn't getting in the middle of that fight. He'll find out on his own time. But ooooh would I love to see his face! Maybe fate would be kind and at least let me be around to witness him finding out that his girlfriend had gone to not one, but two other women to make up for what he lacked. One of which had been a long affair.

"What are you up to?" I asked, looking over my shoulder.

"Just got off work, heard you and Sasha got into it again," he scratched his head, "Sorry. She's been really off herself lately. To be honest, I'm not really sure where it's all coming from. It's like she's holding onto something and she just wont let it go."

"Right?" I chuckled. If he only knew. She's holding onto something alright...

"Any dinner plans?" he wondered, "Thought I would pick up some take out. Want anything specific?"

"Na, I'm good. Thanks for asking. So Jake, I have been meaning to talk to you about something."

"Sure. What is it?"

Don't do it. Don't do it.

"Uh," I decided to heed the voice in my head, "Nevermind, it's not really important. Just something silly."

"Oh, okay?" he seemed confused, but thankfully not enough to pressure the question out of me, "Guess I'm going to go see what she's up to. Keep an eye out for me, eh? Something is wrong, I just can't point my finger on it."

Nodding in agreement, I hid a little laugh under my breath. I finished cleaning up the mess and made my way to the living room to lounge. My phone buzzed in my pocket. It was Rachel. I leaned against the pale white wall of the little corner that separated the living room and kitchen, surely looking a fool in love.

Rachel: 'Hey there'
'Hi there back'
Rachel: 'What are you up to?'
'Just standing here like some lovestruck teen. What about you?'
Rachel: 'Just sitting on the back of my truck thinking about you.'
'Oh yeah? What about me?'
Rachel: 'Just that smile and how much I enjoyed our date. Wish I could have spent more time with you.'
'Me too. But nonetheless I got to work so I can treat you.'
Rachel: 'All I need is you.'

I paused, reflecting on and luxuriating in what was already said. Forget those stupid voices, she really did like me. This was real. I could feel it. Why else would she bother with all this if it was some trick putting me as the butt of a joke? I must have taken too long to respond because another text dinged in.
