~ Coup De Grâce, P. II ~
~ day 38 ~
• C H E Y E N N E •I turn my head, looking through the floor to ceiling windows that made up the left wall of my bedroom. There was no telling what time of night it was currently, but it was late. There weren't many stars in the sky due to the cloudy skies, not that I'd be able to see them past the skyscrapers surrounding the building.
Tonight was peaceful. Since everything that happened with Angel, the wrongs of my life seem to actually be righting themselves. J and I are together again, officially separated from Hayden now since the other night and for once, there was nothing to argue with him about. James hasn't been heard from in almost 3 weeks, one can only think that with Angel out of the picture and unable to help them, that that scared him and Harley off.
I drop my head on the pillow and look to my right, examining a sleeping Suki. She was snoring quietly, head resting on my arm, hand interlocked with mine. On the other side of me, Dahlia is lying on her stomach, arm flung over my abdomen. Joker and Frost are off somewhere, back to their normal routine at the Laugh & Grin as if the last month never happened. Downstairs, Graham was sleeping on the couch, too paranoid to leave the lower level unguarded. Normally, I'd be down there with him, equally as paranoid, but I can't find it in myself to even fake like I'm not reveling in this peace. It's not a feeling I get to feel often and I want to enjoy it. My family is here with me. Safe. Happy. Not one hair on their heads touched. I inhale deep, feeling a sense of calm and safety wash over me.
I wiggle my fingers, testing the give on Suki's grip so that I dont disturb her while I get up out of bed. She stirs in her sleep, but doesn't wake up so once my hand is free, I move Dahlia's arm and lift her head from my shoulder to rest it on her own pillow. I pull on a hoodie before leaving the room quietly and heading downstairs, where I could hear the television on a very low volume, the screen lighting up the entire downstairs area which was otherwise dark.
As I make it all the way down and turn the corner, I see Graham staring at the television absentmindedly as he dismantles the pistol I gave him and puts it back together over and over again. I glance at the tv, finding him watching some silly cartoon, the juxtaposition of him playing with a gun and watching a children's show making me chuckle.
At the sound, he looks over at me, startled enough to drop whatever part of the gun he had just begun reattaching. I could see his face blush a deep pink as he gives me a timid smile. "I'm sorry, am I keeping you up? Is it too loud?"
I shake my head, walking over to the couch and sitting on the other end as he picks up the piece and quickly attaches it to the gun before setting it down on the coffee table and reaching for the remote.
"No, no, no, you're okay," I chuckle, stopping him from picking up the remote. He glances at me and sighs, relaxing against the couch, "I should be saying sorry for keeping you up. Why don't you come upstairs and get some rest?"
"I'm not tired," he starts, but I say his name softly, yet firmly and he presses his lips together before looking away. "I need to keep you safe."
"Sweetheart, I'm safe," I reassure him and he just gives me another sigh. I look at him for a second before scooting closer to him and giving him a light nudge. "I mean I-I've got you and Suki and Dahlia. Plus, there's Joker and his men-"
"See, that's what I don't trust, Cheyenne. I don't trust Joker, I don't trust his men. They're all shady scumbags and the way he treats you is just-" he rambles, rolling his eyes and clenching his jaw at the mention of how J treats me. "Hiding you off in that warehouse when we first got here, then sending all his goons to go through your things, flipping out on you like he did when we were trying to leave. When he's the suspicious one."
