He padded through the forest, trying to ignore the sharp thorns that clung to his long pelt, his icy eyes focused on the path ahead.

If I keep going ahead, maybe one day I can outrun the past.

His head and paws both ached as if they were on fire, but he knew that Nyx would be feeling even worse. Her stomach was heaving with kits, and he couldn't help worrying all the time that the kits would come at the worst time, like in a thunderstorm, or while Nyx was jumping over a river.

"Do you need to stop for a rest?" He placed his tail gently on his sister's shoulder, but she shook  her head, her eyes gleaming with a tired determination. "Are we almost there?"

He nodded, even though he knew that would make Nyx push herself to walk even further.

Just as predicted, she shook her glossy mostly black pelt and started forward again. "Then let's go," She sighed.

He nodded and took the lead again, trying to feel sure of where he was going.

If I make one wrong move...

He glanced fugitively over his shoulder.

Then I won't just lead my sister and her kits to their deaths.

I'll lead myself too.
