They padded through the grass in utter silence. Maple walked behind Menace and Flowertail, her limbs weak and her paws simply padding after her littermate silently without any thoughts.

Her mind felt bleak and empty. She couldn't think, couldn't get any thoughts through her head. Nyx's body had been buried a quarter-moon ago, but Maple hadn't gotten over her.

She suspected she never would.

Menace had been just as lifeless. Flowertail seemed to be the only cat who could urge him to continue back to the Clans.

Flowertail.

Flowertail the one who'd killed Nyx. Flowertail the one should have died.

Maple stumbled and almost collapsed to the ground, and Cliff barely managed to help her to her paws before she fell.

"Are you okay?" Cliff murmured.

Maple opened her mouth to say something, anything, but she couldn't speak. Her throat ached from wailing into the moss in her nest when she was sure the others were asleep. She thought she'd thrown up a few times but the days had blurred together so much she couldn't be sure.

"Do you want to stop?"

I want to kill Flowertail.

Maple felt a pang of surprise at her own thoughts.

Am I really a murderer? I don't think I could kill a cat anyway. I just want her to suffer and go through pain.

Maple shook her head numbly and Cliff allowed her to lean on him as she walked.

He's so supportive and caring.

She was distantly aware of Menace telling everyone it was time to rest for the night somewhere in the real world. Her paws crumbled beneath her and she felt a dark cloud of sleep submerge her, clearing her head. But she knew she'd wake up soon, and reality would crash over her icily. Again.

For now, she was content to be oblivious.

Flowertail rose to her paws and helped Menace wake up. Every morning, she had to help Menace out of his nest because he didn't want to keep going without Nyx.

She hardly slept at night.

And it wasn't because of Maple's heartbreaking wails in the middle of the night for her sister, or because Menace constantly had nightmares about his sister's death.

It was because she was afraid to sleep.

She knew the moment she shut her eyes Nyx's blank eyes would flash through her head. She knew she'd feel Maple's accusing looks again, her eyes which clearly read who she thought should've died.

And then there were the voices. The ones that constantly reminded her that she was a murderer. That Nyx's death was on her paws.

That it was her fault.

It made Flowertail want to scream and wail for her mother all at the same time.

By the time ThunderClan territory was within their view, the moon had risen. None of them had cared enough to notice, but instead of the usual pale grey round disc in the sky, it was a dark, pure red color that cast a deathly glow across the Clans.

The group of four cats, which should have been five, as Flowertail's guilty subconscious reminded her, marched emptily through the camp entrance, and Flowertail took the lead.

I'm going to have to see Fox-Dung again, Flowertail reminded herself, and wondered if anybody would notice a few thorns in his nest. She was in a foul mood and-

Flowertail froze. So did every cat behind her.

The ThunderClan cats stood scattered at the edges of the camp, their pelts bristling in shock.

Littlebird, drenched in eerie blood-red light from the moon, stood over Bramblestar's dead body, his throat slashed and blood oozing all over the camp floor and onto her paws. And it wasn't just his blood; other Clan cats' bodies lay scattered.

What caught Flowertail's attention, however, wasn't the barely visible outlines of a brown tabby, or the starry figure of a grey tom with blue eyes. It was a ginger and grey lump of fur dripping blood softly onto the ground.

Icepool.
