2:33am,
Ada & Simi's room.A quiet and creepy feeling filled the air, and it was pretty cold. A sports show played loud on TV, but it felt far away. Teng sat on the sofa with his hand on his chin, Ada was on the edge of one bed, and Simi lay on the other, thinking over and over about all the chaotic stuff that went down with Adam up in his penthouse moments ago. All the anger, the pain, and the guilt mixed up, creating a loud mess inside her, much like the TV noise.
Her mind raced, trying to find comfort amidst the emotional chaos. The echoes of their intense conversation lingered in her mind, and a sense of loneliness grew within her. Opening up about her past had brought back old feelings of guilt she'd carried for years and ruined her connection with Adam. However, at that moment, it felt like his pain and anger overshadowed her own vulnerability. When she shared the truth, hoping he'd understand, it backfired. It turned out he accused her and pushed her away.
She felt really mad thinking about everything he said. His blame was like an unfair weight on her, his accusations and the sadness in his eyes kept bothering her, making her even more mixed up. She knew she was not solely responsible for Sam's death, yet the burden of guilt and the anger directed at her created a tempestuous battlefield in her mind. She struggled with the unfairness of being portrayed as the bad guy in a story she couldn't fully control. It hurt a lot, and now he wanted her to go back to Abuja, making it clear that things had changed between them.
Simi couldn't shake the anger that burned within her, making her question the threads of her relationships, how she ended up in this. Every attempt to rationalize the events seemed futile. It felt like an injustice, a cruel twist of fate that Adam, in his grief, had pointed fingers at her as if she alone bore the weight of Stone's tragedy. She tried not to cry, holding back her tears because she didn't want to show weakness.
A mix of emotions swirled inside her, propelling her to her feet with a sudden, determined resolve. The room felt colder as she walked to the closet, her movements fueled by a mixture of anger and determination. In that moment, she had resolved to distance herself from the accusations, the pain, and the unraveling of a past she wished she could rewrite.
As she began packing her belongings, the act itself mirrored her desire to pack away the memories, the guilt, and the burden that came with her connection to Stone's demise. Her sudden decision served as both a way to protect herself and a tool to defend against the hurtful accusations.
"What are you doing?" Ada turned towards her, concern etched on her face.
"I'm going home. Back to Abuja," Simi answered, her actions quick and determined, avoiding eye contact with Ada.
"What? Why?" Teng got up and walked toward her, trying to understand what was happening.
"Simi, this is too sudden. We need to figure things out first. You can't keep disappearing, you said that yourself," Ada, maintaining her posture in the bed urged.
"He asked me to leave his family alone, Ada, to go back to Abuja. And to be honest, he's right. I don't have any reason to stick around. Everything is just too messy for me to handle right now. I need to be back in my space," Simi explained, her frustration mounting as she folded her clothes into a leather bag.
"Your shell you mean? See, he can't tell you what to do, where to go or where to be. He can't ask you to leave. He only said that because of how he feels, because he's angry—" Ada asserted.
"I understand he's pained but why is he putting all the blame on me? Hmm? I'm just as much of a victim as he is. I lost Stone too. I almost lost myself. He has no idea what I went through. And tonight, he made it feel like it was all my fault. Like I would have ever imagined Stone dead. That's just unfair and my heart really hurts Ada. I want to go back home. I've had enough of this."
