He dropped his bags with a heavy thud by the sofa, the weight of exhaustion pulling at his shoulders. With a sigh, he dashed into the mini-bar, his heart craving the cold embrace of a beer. Fingers trembling with anticipation, he yanked open the tabletop fridge and seized a can. The cold liquid slid down his throat in one long gulp, the familiar taste a comfort after a long journey.
With a flick of his wrist, he tossed the empty can into the waiting trash bin, and took a very deep breath, the air filling his lungs as he blew out his cheeks. The apartment was quiet, just as he had left it, and he felt a rush of relief at being back in his own space, away from the chaos of the world outside.
His hands rested on the small counter, his gaze sweeping over the familiar surroundings. It was good to be home, but he couldn't shake the feeling of emptiness that lingered in the air. The place needed some dusting, and definitely more beer.
As he lowered his head to the counter, memories of Simi flooded his mind again. Vivid images of their time together flashed before his eyes, the intimacy they had shared in a hotel room in Abuja. The memory was bittersweet, the sensation of her touch still fresh in his mind. He closed his eyes, the burning tension between them still palpable, even miles apart.
With her hands snaked round his neck, her skin had been so soft and satiny up against his, and her tender eyes, brimming with untamed passion, captured his soul, rendering him powerless. The taste of her lingered on his lips, a symphony of ragged breaths and soft moans echoing in his mind. He could still feel the throb whenever she dug her fingertips in his skin until all he wanted was to be inside her warmth. And when he found how much she was wet for him, it had been too magnetic and maddening, the way he had held onto her, he didn't want to stop, she'd begged him not to.
He couldn't believe that after that, they'd go back to being strangers.
"Simi, please let's stay in touch. I'm begging you. There's something here, you can feel it too I know. I don't want to lose it. I don't want to lose you." Adam's heart raced as he pleaded with Simi, his voice quivering with emotion.
Simi's eyes glistened with unshed tears, her voice barely above a whisper, "New York is not here in Nigeria, it's not even in Africa. It's a whole world away from here Adam. You can't keep my hopes up that we could be something. Not when you have a whole life there. It's not as easy as you're trying to make it. "
Adam stepped closer, his hands reaching out but stopping just short of touching her. "I know and that's why I'm asking you to try at least."
"It's impossible."
At first he didn't understand her sudden aloofness especially after the intimacy they had shared. He had assumed she wanted him as much as he wanted her. But as he looked deeper, he realized she was right. Whether he liked how it sounded or not, it was the bitter truth, the reality and Simi was a realist, not a dreamer - like him anyway. Long distance was not his forte, and deep down, he knew it wasn't hers either. He had thought it might be worth a try for her sake, but maybe he was wrong.
The memory of her disappointed expression lingered, haunting him. He had hoped she would at least want to remain friends after their passionate night together, but then again with women... you never really know. Just when you thought you understood them, they surprised you.
At that moment he knew it was really over with them. Or... maybe it was too early to conclude. Should he wait for her to reach out? Would she even bother? He decided he wouldn't pressure her, to let her make the next move. He respected her feelings, whatever they might be. In matters of the heart, he had learned, it was best when both parties were on the same page. He would wait, hopeful yet prepared for whatever outcome awaited him.
