NY City
She must have been kidding, saying she was taking his son away again, Adam brooding furiously where he sat on his office desk looked out through the glass window of the very tall city building, drumming his fingers on his lap, the other hand under his chin, elbow on the desk.
Meeting Wayne was the most intense moment he had ever had. Since he found out about him, he had imagined meeting his son and it was nothing like he expected. Holding him in his hands for the first time, he hadn't expected feel everything. At first he was scared, scared of hurting him and at the same time scared of what the future held, his safety for all eternity but he also felt an extreme love and hopefulness he had never experienced. Different thoughts rippled through him. He was mad at himself, for who he had been in his past, who he had become. He wished he had been there when his son was born, he wished he had known, but now he could only hope to be his best for his future, now that he was here.
Literally every emotion and thought - negative and positive all had wrapped up into one in a matter of a couple seconds when he was back at Lily's house, Wayne in his hands. A part of him couldn't believe he was actually in his arms, while the other part of him felt like he had known him his entire life so when Lily announced that they were moving to Detroit, a fresh swell of fury rose in him.
"You've got to be kidding me right?"
Lily didn't answer him immediately. Instead, she stooped to pick Wayne's toys that were scattered on the floor.
"Lily?"
"I'm not kidding you. Why would I even kid you with something like that? But it's not just my decision to make okay? My parents want a better life for Wayne and me. They enrolled him in a school, got me a job and a small house across the farm. Adam, I have them to thank."
"This doesn't make any sense. You hate the farm. Why did you bother telling me about Wayne if you knew you never wanted me to be a part of his life?"
"You were supposed to know."
He rose up and walked across the room towards the large TV set. Inwardly, he was seething.
"Right. And then what? I go back to my normal life and forget about him? About you?"
"I never said you can't come visit him. Or holidays. Or whatever other way to be a part of his life I don't know but don't think for a second that I'm just going to stay back here, in New York, when nothing good is happening to me. I lost you, I lost Todd my job, my friends, I'm losing everything. I might lose my parents if I don't listen to them this one time. They hate me enough already. I'm lonely here and Wayne is all I have now. I've done everything wrong and this is my chance of doing one thing right."
"I understand you're trying to do right with your folks but..but I'm here...I'm back... things can be different and you really don't have to do this all by yourself." Adam retorted in an inscrutable manner.
"What are you saying?" Her brows snapped together trying to understand him.
"I'm saying... I'm saying you don't have to go back to that town... live in a 'small house'... I know you hate it there. You can stay here with me and we can take care of our own kid together. You'll get a better job. I know a good school around too Lily. Remember how we always wanted to do that."
"Adam, clearly things are not the same with us anymore. We're no longer married. We're barely strangers." She reminded him of the reality.
"Yeah I know that but... now we have something that's bound us together for the rest of our lives, something bigger than marriage. Wayne! And we still share those plans. Right? (He held her firm by the arms and she nodded) Then we have to make it work."
