In the time before the pandemic, Carl would run into different people every day at the office. There would be different people in the kitchen depending on the day of the week and the time of day. But now there were only ever the people who were usually in on Mondays.
Carl had no idea who was in on the other days of the week. He didn't know who had been hired or let go. He only knew the people who talked to him on Teams or who he saw in Teams meetings during the week. It was easy to forget that there were people in the office on other days.
Then one Friday afternoon, an email went out telling everyone that if they had lost a "personal item" in the fourth floor bathrooms, they could find it in the drawer of desk 42W.
