Carl hadn't replied to the note the week before. He didn't know if he wanted to know who was on the other side of the note. He wanted to keep pretending it was someone he didn't know, someone more interesting than the people he already knew. He wanted some mystery.
He stood in the gender-neutral bathroom, staring at the notepad.
He removed the topmost note, took the purple pen, and wrote, "Do you want to tell me who you are?" on the next note.
He looked at the note he had written. He removed it.
"Do you know who I am?" he wrote back.
