Carl sat at his desk and looked at the adaptor in his hand. There was something almost subversive about putting a heart sticker on an adaptor that was going into a lost and found bin.
He plugged the adaptor in, and connected his phone to it. His phone started to charge. At least the adaptor worked.
He was sitting next to the window looking out at the Sandwich Select building. He watched the people go in and out of the Sandwich Select. Most of them came right back out with their food. Almost no one was going into the building itself, which made Carl think that it was mostly vacant.
A small coffee shop had opened next to the Sandwich Select over the past week. Carl had gone to it that morning before coming into the office. He had liked it. It had warm-toned walls, with dark wooden tables, and a small display case of pastries. There was art on the walls and classic Tropicália music playing in the background.
The barista had been in the middle of drawing flowers on the blackboard menu when Carl had walked in.
Carl had drunk his coffee while looking at the art on the wall. An abstract painting of a sea scape done with a palette knife stood out to him. There was something about the mass of green paint on one side, and blue sea on the other that spoke to him, but he didn't quite know what it was saying.
Carl stared at the adaptor plugged into the power bar on the desk. He knew the heart sticker wasn't beating, but he felt it should be. He decided he would get his afternoon coffee from the coffee shop, too. He would rather go there than have a Nespresso, even if he had brought his favourite pods with him from home.
