We drove to the gig in silence. Ricky kept shooting me weird glances and I couldn't stop thinking about what Rhea had asked me while she did my make up. Ricky was very attractive, anybody would tell you that; he wasn't short of admirers put it that way. And obviously he has an amzing personality otherwise he wouldn't be the person with the prestigious title of 'Emilys Best Friend'.
"Why are you looking at me?" Ricky asked, glancing at me
"I'm not" I replied, quickly averting my gaze
"You so were, you were staring at me" laughed Ricky
"Well you must of been staring at me to know I was staring at you!" I said childishly
We both fell silent. Why was it feeling so weird tonight? It's never normally awkward between us.
"You look really pretty tonight Emz" Ricky said, breaking the silence
I was so glad that he was focusing on his driving because I could feel my cheeks going red.
What the hell is wrong with me?!
"Thanks so do you" I replied
"Aaaaw you really think I'm pretty?" asked Ricky, putting on a silly girly voice, "I put my new lip gloss on especially"
"You are such a dork" I giggled, hitting his arm.

The gig was in a small club. Ricky must have literally bought tickets the second they went on sale because this looked like it had such a small capacity compared to the usual larger venues. I thought it was cool that there was a little bar at the back that you could sit at and watch the band.
"Lets go and stand closer to the stage so we're near the front when they come on" I said leading Ricky towards the stage
There weren't too many people between us and the stage.
"Oh and thanks again for getting these tickets and coming here with me. I know you're not a fan of The Heavies, what is it you say their music is?" I asked
"Shit" Ricky replied bluntly, giving me a cheeky grin
A girl to the left of me was staring at Ricky as if he'd just said he had three extra toes on one foot
"Oh no psycho fan alert" he whispered in my ear
He wasn't wrong. She was whispering to all her friends who were now all glaring at Ricky.
"I owe you a favour now" I said, trying to not laugh at the girls trying to murder Ricky with their eyes, "Next time you need something I'm your girl"
"I'll remember that" he grinned
Lets just hope it won't be a repeat of the last time I owed him a favour. He was meant to be taking Rhea trick or treating but had made seperate plans with friends. He asked me to take her out instead. He failed to mention that she was going as Cinderella and that unlike my plans to go in normal clothes I would instead be forced (by a screaming at the time 10 year old) to dress as one of the ugly stepsisters. I wouldn't mind but I saw sooo many people from school that night.
The lights dimmed and the support act came on stage. They were kind of rubbish and you could tell the whole crowd was thinking "get off the damn stage now so The Heavies can come on!". When they finally stopped killing me with their music they left the stage and intro music started playing for The Heavies.
It seemed like a gazillion people appeared from nowhere (or from the place they'd taken refuge while the support act was on) and squashed behind us. Ricky moved me in front of him and put his arms round me to stop me getting squished. This simple act was something he'd done a million times before at gigs (I've dragged him to quite a few!) but I felt so strange. I turned my head to give him a smile, which he reciprocated but I was distracted by the crowd screaming - The Heavies had come on stage!
