Anirudh let out a humorless chuckle. "Here you are Kaka, with your baseless superstitions."

Trilochan tightened his grip on the cane in anger. "Superstitions? You cannot call my beliefs superstitions. I never called your beliefs baseless!"

"Baseless?" Anirudh's eyes grew darker. "You find my beliefs baseless, Kaka? They are for a brighter future!" his voice got louder.

"Your beliefs are for a brighter future then what about mine? Darker future?" Trilochan argued back.

"Maybe," Anirudh ended up answering rudely, making Bondita clench her fist.

"Really?" Bondita spoke up calmly. She faced Anirudh. "Patibabu, what if I agree with Kakasasurji about the widow thing?"

Anirudh became quiet, trying to find an answer to her question. She was his Bondita and she couldn't be wrong, he had this in his mind.

Bondita gave a tight-lipped smile, understanding his silence. "Just because you are right, doesn't mean others are wrong. What happened to you? Why can't you respect Kakasasurji's beliefs?"

She walked to take the empty coffee mug in her hand as she continued, "Your mind is set on that Kakasasurji is always wrong, but when I am in the same boat like him, suddenly, you accept that because Bondita can never be wrong. She has a progressive thinking so she must be right!"

She turned to Anirudh again, who was quiet and Trilochan watched everything with amusement as his bahu was taking his side, giving an earful to Anirudh.

"Kakasasurji changed his beliefs a lot for you and you don't even want to attend a puja. You are adamant on your beliefs only. Try to listen to him for once!" Bondita had a look of disappointment in her eyes as she was about to walk out of the study.

Anirudh hated to see her disappointed at him. His heart clenched seeing her walking away.

"Bondita..." Anirudh called out finally, and she stopped in her tracks. "Do you actually believe in the widow thing?" he inquired.

Bondita had a smile on her lips and nodded. "I do, but for different reasons. There are so many young bachelors in our house, especially Keth Dada and Som. Even though you are married, girls admire you. So is it safe to keep a single woman in the outhouse for a longer period?" She added, "You cared about Mala and Barsha Kaki's safety, then what about your brothers' safety?" With that, she left and went to the kitchen.

Kaka's eyes grew as wide as saucers at what Bondita said. "Bahu has a point! What if that widow lures one of my sons? No, no, this cannot happen," mumbled Trilochan as he also walked out.

Anirudh just ran a hand through his hair and groaned in frustration. "Why do I keep hurting her? Why am I so dumb sometimes?"
