Before reaching Mayesh's residence, Anirudh had already sent one of the GeetKala employees ahead with a message. It had been a simple courtesy. As a barrister, he preferred asking questions before making accusations.

Unfortunately, the answer that returned had done little to please him.

"Mayesh Babu said he isn't keeping well today," the man had informed nervously. "He has taken leave and isn't meeting anyone."

The very timing of that leave had made Anirudh's eyes narrow.

Now, the jeep stood outside a large two-storied house surrounded by high walls and iron gates. It was far too grand for an ordinary music instructor.

Tara peered through the window. "Barrister Babu, this house is huge."

"Hm."

She noticed the seriousness in his face and immediately straightened. "Should I come with you?"

"No."

Tara blinked.

Anirudh turned toward her, his voice gentle but firm. "You will stay inside the jeep."

"But—"

"No arguments." She lowered her eyes. "Tara." His tone softened. "I don't know what sort of man Mayesh is. I don't intend to risk your safety."

"But equal allies—"

"Equal allies are also responsible for one another." A faint smile appeared on his face. "And right now, my responsibility is ensuring that you remain safe."

The little girl reluctantly nodded.

"Lock the doors from inside. Don't open them for anyone except me."

"Ji."

"And if I take too long—"

"I'll wait."

Anirudh's expression softened slightly.

Good.

He stepped out and made his way toward the house.

Mayesh himself opened the door. He wore simple white clothes and spectacles rested upon his nose. His hair was neatly combed, and surprise appeared on his face. "Barrister Babu?"

Anirudh smiled politely. "Mayesh."

"What an unexpected honor." His voice carried perfect manners. Perfect surprise. Too perfect.

"I heard you were unwell."

"Oh, merely a headache." He chuckled. "Nothing serious."

His eyes briefly shifted behind Anirudh.

Searching. Anirudh noticed.

Looking for someone? Or making sure someone hadn't accompanied him?

"May I come in?" Anirudh asked pleasantly.

"Of course."

The drawing room reflected wealth. Imported furniture. Expensive carpets. A gramophone in one corner. Paintings on the walls.

Not the house of a simple employee.

Mayesh offered tea.

Anirudh declined.

Instead, he removed his pocket watch and placed it calmly upon the table.

The action made Mayesh frown slightly.

"I won't take much of your time."

"Certainly."

Anirudh sat opposite him. "You knew Chandni Jaiswal."
