Chapter One, "Best Burger Shops Near Me"
Zuko was banging his head on his desk, his right arm aching dully, he had unfinished Economics homework spread out over his desk. Zuko hated Economics.
Who the fuck cares if the cost of brown rice went down in 1994 and what effect it had on housing?
Oh, the joys of being a business major.
Zuko looked up at the clock on his wall, the time was 9:43 pm. He slumped back in his desk chair again, he was in his dorm room.
It was a small room, he had his bed shoved against the left wall, his wardrobe and shelves were built into the right wall and his desk was in the middle of the back wall, just in front of the window.
One might think it was a nice room as far as university dorm rooms go but most of Zuko's belongings were strewn about on the floor, shelves and his bed. As much as Zuko tried to keep his room tidy, some days he just didn't feel like he could keep up with the endless cycle of cleaning up a mess only for it to become a mess once again.
Zuko sighed and closed his laptop, plugging it in and leaving his desk. He stretched his arms above his head and yawned, he had a bad headache and his right arm had been aching all day. He decided it was probably time to go to the bathroom and get ready for bed.
He opened his door and locked it behind him, putting his room key in his pocket. It wasn't likely for any of his stuff to get stolen, these dorms were filled with pretty decent people, but Zuko didn't like to chance it. Besides, this way no one could see the hurricane that had gone off in his room.
He walked down the hall, passing six doors and then he walked by a lounge. A couple of students were still up. Three guys were playing some sort of board game, by the looks of it, nobody was winning.
"You bitch!" one of them shouted as the other two laughed.
Zuko carried on walking. He passed six more doors and turned a corner that led down another long dormitory corridor. He walked by two girls chatting excitedly leaning against the wall, as he passed them he caught some of their conversation.
"I just got it last night! It's going be their first words to me!"
"That's so sweet!"
Zuko glanced at them. The taller girl was showing the shorter girl her thigh where some black writing had appeared on it. She must have gotten her soulmate mark.
A soulmate mark was what connected you to your soulmate, and it was different for everyone. For some people it was the first words their soulmates would say to them, for others it was the last words their soulmate would say to them. Sometimes someone would have a handprint where their soulmate would touch them first, some people only had a name. And that was just the more well-known ones.
There were hundreds of different soulmate marks, too many to list. Zuko had even heard of some people having certain types of media references as their marks, like quotes or jokes from TV shows, Movies and other entertainment like that.
There weren't only romantic soulmates, there were also platonic soulmates instead, sometimes you could have up to five platonic soulmates in one mark. Sometimes there were even people who fell in love despite not being soulmates, either never receiving a soulmate mark or actively ignoring it.
Zuko didn't have a soulmate mark, or at least not yet, but that wasn't uncommon. Your soulmate mark could appear anywhere from when you were born to the day you die. Although usually marks appeared in the late teens or early thirties. And there were a few souls who never received a soulmate mark and never would, romantic, platonic or otherwise. This suited some people just fine but Zuko hoped he wasn't one of these people.
